I have gotten in real trouble in my current game. I spent most of my game in war with the japanese and because of that i have become the most backward civ on the planet. (I eventually wiped out the japanese). Even the lowest civ is about 5 techs ahead of me right now. I have tried to get in the trading game, but do to my ROP RAPE (I had no choice) of japan everyone hates me. Its 800 Ad and my vast landmass is guarded by solitary legionaries and spearmen. I am under a republic currently with the majority of my cities producing markets, and a forbidden palace has been built in the old Japanese Capitol. I have one Great Leader that hasnt been used (nothing to rush) and have 100g and am making 9 per turn. I dont understand how my gpt can be so low, i have about 20 cities. Any help on how to get me back in the ballgame would be greatly thanked.

(Please dont flame me for posting a message about a GOTM game here, i wasnt competing this time and was keeping no timeline)

:king:

If the only way you could take out a rival civ was to ROP rape them, you deserve the ruined reputation. I wouldn't trade with you either if I were one of the AI civs. Maybe others will have helpful suggestions, but I'm not exactly sympathetic to your situation. :o

First, what is your gov't. Second, how large is you army. In a republic, you'll go bankrupt if you don't have enough trade set to tax to pay for you army. Depeding upon where you are in the tech tree, 9gpt & 100 gold isn't enough to buy anything. If you haven't already, build embasy's with your future trading partners. That makes them a little happy at first. Then give your maps & such. If you don't have roads in all land squares currently being worked, build a bunch of workers to build road. Depending on the size of the map and the corruption, You might a bunch of corrupt cities (No income from them)

As far as the ROP thing, i really had no choice. I was severly behind in techs and the advantage of having legionaries to his spearmen was about to run out. The reason i started the ROP with Japan in the first place was because they were sending several swordmen into my territory and settlers (i had no space for them to settle, so i figured they planned on making some). They also were beginning to upgrade to pikemen. The only way i could stand a chance against them was to get a ROP pact, get some legionaries on their iron deposists, spend all my extra cash upgrading my warriors and then rush and prey. It worked good except for the fact that they were just about as technologicaly advanced as me. So in return for peace they gave me a few lousy techs that the GW's for had already been built, about 200 gold, and contacts with people who hated me. I figured the only way i could get back in the game was to beat a oppenent into a pulp and get what they had, but it backfired. As for my military i have a legion or two in each of my 20 cities, and thats all thats left after the war.

9 g pr city is way to low, but it's a bit hard to give advice when we don't know what % your science slider is at. You need at least 150% workers compared to your citycount. About 30 in your case, and they need to develop roads on every producing tile starting with your palace and FP cities. You need to reduce corruption first. So build courthouses where the corruption is above 1/3 of your production.

I built a ton of settlers to start developing this third world country of mine, and after a few turns i got really tired of moving them around. So i automated them.... THEY IRRAGATED EVERYTHING!!! Is their a certain reason why they do this? I have had it happen a little in previous games, but this is crazy. The only thing they mined is the hills. Is this the way they normally work? ( I usually play standard or smaller maps so i do the work myself mostly) Anyways i have lux at 30% and research at 40%

Move your science rate to zero, it is impossible to catch up when behind through learning

With the extra money you are earning you will soon be able to buy techs and start catching up

Connect all luxury resources up that you can and reduce your luxury rate, usually while at peace 10% is enough. Againthe extra money will allow for rush builds or tech buys

I agree with Trev on this one. When all your luxuries are connect, and you have a surplus of one (hopefully more) of them, see if you can trade it with one of the AIs. Pick the largest civilizations first, this is because they benefit the most of it, and will be prepared to pay more than a smaller civ would.

And this time, keep up to your trades.

Good luvk

RoP: Right of Passage

there's a whole list of abbreviations like this one in the faq I think, don't know the right thread though

Well I thank you guys for the help. I do have one more question though (just for the sake of knowing). Do you benifit from having more than one of a certain luxury? i.e. I have 4 ivory, 3 dyes, 1 gem, and 2 Furs. If i was to lose 1 of each would it effect my happiness, or as long as i have one of what ever the luxury would it stay the same?

Only one of each luxury is used for your civilisation. The extras can be traded for money or techs or other resources with the AI's.

The benefit of the extra luxuries is only in the trades that you do with them, so talk to the other civs, making sure at least one of your coastal cities have a harbour ( this almost certainly guarantees that a transport route will exist btween you and the other civs ) and do the deals that will get you money or techs etc.

Often the best deals are done with strategic resources like iron, saltpetre etc. This is good to do if you do not anticipate an early war with that civ

Since your name is mud in the international community for the ROP violation, the only way you'll likely be able to buy techs is at lump sum amounts. As advised by previous posters, kill your research rate to 0%, trim back luxuries to the minimum and pump tax to the max. At 500-700 gp you should be able to buy most Medieval Techs, one at a time. Eventually if you keep your word you'll be able to start gpt trades.

As for getting enough workers to develop your land and saving money, add your own worker people back into cities and rush build out the Japanese ones, they are then free slave workers.

Alternatively you've probably still got alot of offensive units left over from the war, find your weakest neighbour and take a few cities from him and sue for peace. You'll use up excessive non-upgradable legioniares, thus reducing your overall army budget but also get a few more cities and hopefully the techs you need.

If your losing the tech race by the time a leading civ gets Fission (therefore the UN) then you can pretty much kiss the game goodbye to a Diplomatic victory for the AI. Especially if you have a bad rep with other civs cause you'll never be able to get enough on your side to at least form an inconclusive vote.

I read the post about going back to war so i took what units i had plus a few more i had the ability to produce and headed up to America to try and shave some cities off of them. But the problem is they had a military about 5 times the size of mine so they promply took the cities and back and roared into my territories with several stacks of Calvary and completly abolished about 1/4 of my territory. Oh well, i guess i better get on my knees and start praying to the almighty. At least they decided to spare some of my land. lol! As far as the whole tech trade game at this level, what are some of the techs that the AI generally doesnt head toward? I have tried to establish a trend but i cant find a definite way that they plow through the tech tree.

I am going to retry this one and start out using some of the techniques that you guys have told me.

I really really appreciate the help

I would recommend trying an easier level and practising your trading. In my opinion you can't survive on empreor without at least basic trading skills and your questions about luxuries suggests that this is not an area you have explored much. Those 6 extra luxuries that you aren't using should bring in 200+ gpt. it might not all be directly in gold though. You should get other luxuries, they ae cheaper than the entertainment scale. This will help build you rep and allow you to keep your entertainment spending to 0 and make income from the extra luxuries. Also, you can not automate your workers that early int he game on Emperor. Sometimes I get lazy after I have my RR built out, but even then when I see the idiotic things they do, I have to take them off of automate.

I also seond the other recomendations, set your science to 0. You can not catch up on regent with that sort of deficit. WHne you are the last ciz to buy a tech it is on a very heavy discount.
