No two ways about it; the unit animations in Civ V are great - the first few times. I believe, though, that they're one of the main reasons for late game, or early game on a large or huge map, slowdown.

I'd like to have the option under the Advanced tab of the game setup to turn off unit animations. I put out a request in the Mods forum but no one jumped at it. That may be because the animations are controlled at a level that's not easily accessible.

Just hit F10 to toggle Strategic View. Tap it twice after you send, say, a Bomber on a mission.
And make sure to have it on before you click Next Turn.

Yes, this would certainly be a good option to have. Bombers in particular are annoying. It seems exceedingly odd to me that there is an option in the advanced setup to turn on quick combat, but no option in the game. I can't think of a good reason for this.

This would seem to be a no-brainer for a graphically intensive game like Civ. I posted a request for information on this topic in the modding forums, but unfortunately no one jumped at it – not even to the extent of telling me that it couldn't be done. One person did reply that unit animations can be turned off in a multiplayer game. Because of the numerous issues associated with multiplayer, I am unable to verify that. If it's true then I wonder why the code wasn't included as an option in single player as well.

Although I'm not a modder I did install the SDK and I poked around a bit. Each unit has an individual set of .fpk files, one for each state. Their combined size is fairly large so I can see why the game slows (especially in the late game) when there are many units.I'm going to keep beating this and, if I have to, I'll create a simplified set of fpk files that have only one frame each. That sounds tedious I know, at this point it seems to be the only remedy.
