Ending Era

After reading through one of the "what kind of units do you want to see" threads I noticed that many would like to have some futuristic weaponry. Since I really don't want to play with cyborgs all the time (I don't get what kind of advantage they could have against a tank) I thought it might be cool to be able to customize your ending era the same as you can your starting era in Civ IV. I know that Empire Earth had that kind of options and we often used it in MP to only play until WW2 weaponry or even only till cavalry and cannons arrived.
MP (at least now in Civ IV) gets really dragged out because of the many airplanes everyone has to manage, so a game ending with cavalry or WW1 weaponry would be a nice addition. I know my father would like it, because his PC gets much too slow when airplanes are flying over every city, but that's another cup of tea :)
What do you think? Are there other people out there who would use that feature?

Yes that would be a great feature to have and im sure a lot of people would use it. It would break the game with so much free gold from no tech though. If everyone shut their sliders off, say once they had Universal Suffrage, imagine what huge armies they could amass in a short time with all that gold.

This is what i wrote in another post :

I'm not sure if there's another thread like this, but i have a suggestion for the civ5 developers.

Every time i play i always get bored when i reach the modern ages. I always start new games because i only find the beginning and the middle of the game fun - between stone age and industrial.

My suggestion for the developers is to be able to set a certain age (stone age, classical, medieval, renaissance, industrial or modern) as a stop. For example, if you choose renaissance as the final age, you cannot go any further in technology - only play between stone age and renaissance and that's it.

I'm sure that i'm not the only one who loves to play with the early gunpowder units and airplanes, and then gets bored once there's modern armors and nukes all over the place.

Thanks! :goodjob:

Really like the idea :) would be awesome if i could stop in the industrial age!

Oh I love it! I make a suggestion, and suddenly everyone's copying it in their own threads! Glad I got proof of firstness, though, in the form of mention on Polycast the other day.

Please everyone, continue to copy me as much as you like, but link back to my threads when you do. Once word gets out how much of a trendsetter I am, AND if it impresses a certain girl I know in L.A., it's a free beer (or taco if you don't drink) for everyone!

Yes, I've always wanted this feature in civ4.

I would gladly post your link and get my free beer when I'm in L.A. next time :)

Maybe I'll throw a bunch of parties around the country. I'll post an itinerary, and that way you won't be wondering whether I'm coming to your town or if you'll have to travel to some other town.

What always gets me is the last 100 rounds or so is always about oil. If you ain't got oil by then you are screwed, there is no other way around it.

In the beginning if you don't have iron you are in trouble but you can get around it. Bide your time, get gun powder and you don't need iron like you did before.

But in the modern era if you ain't got oil you can't make tanks, you can't build planes or artillery...you are screwed unless you can get someone else to save you.

So i wouldn't mind a game that cuts off just before then or perhaps keeps going into the future where you can develop technology so that you don't need oil any more.
