No, your not the only one. I just bought the game yesterday, went to Steam to get the extra downloadable content, and it updates the game automatically with any patches available. On the load screen the opening video will play, as soon as it's over, I get a black screen. Have to do a control/escape to get out of it, then the game comes up. I started a game with England on the Huge Earth Map, was bad enough that it started me out where China should be, but then when I got to 220A.D. screen locked up, mouse cursor would still move, but no sound, and no reaction when you clicked on anything. Eveytime I tried loading the auto-save after that, as soon as I would click on the "Begin your Journey" tab, and b4 I mouse click on anything, screen lock, same as when the game initally froze up on me. And I doubt it's my machine, because it meets, and in most cases exceeds the minimum requirements for running the game!
I'm gonna go check the game version again, and the latest patch version just to make sure it's right, but I think the issue is in the software, and not my rig!
Well, maybe it was my rig. I downloaded a program called "DriveBoost", it cost me @ $30.00 but it appears to have solved my issue. It scans your system and lets you know what hardware has available updates, including hardware that isn't made by Microsoft, or Intel. As it turns out, my Video Graphics card was in great need of an updated driver, now it seems to be working just fine. No more black screen, no freezing after clicking the "Begin your Journey" tab, when loading the aforementioned saved game.
Don't get me wrong, I did some experimenting first and found I could still play the game without the updated driver, but only if I used DX-9. but my card is supposed to be at least DX-10 compatible. Anyway, updating the driver seems to have resolved the issue, now it's playing fine with DX-10/11 and all the eye-candy that comes with it!
My suggestion, if your experiencing any of the issues I described, check your driver updates, there could be an issue even with a new system. You never know how long it sat on a shelf b4 you bought it, and what may have been updated while it was sitting there...
