Hi folks. The title says it all really. There was no such thing as an English Empire. There was a British Empire. This is not an unimportant detail. Try playing this game as a Scot and see how it feels.

Surely the developers could have got this right? Is there any way to contact them to see if this can maybe be put right in a subsequent patch? I sure hope so as the game is brilliant otherwise. Once this is publicized I think they'll lose a lot of sales, which would be a shame.

There have always only been the English in Civ. While I agree with you, this has been talked to death a long time ago.

And it won't affect sales.

Ah, the eternal issue, well, for the average non-British England=Britain. Rebellious Scots and Welsh fall under the Celtic civ. I dont have the game yet... can the English civ build Scottish cities?

How bout modding in Scotland? Robert and Mary for the win with the invincible Clansman unit! ;)

As already mentioned it's always been the English, I would personally prefer it to be British Empire than English but I suppose it's been English longer than British.

I was born in England and currently live in Jersey but my grandad was born in Scotland and my nan in Wales (one on each side) so a British Empire would suit me as well.

If I find the time I might try and change English to British and use the Union Flag instead of the St. George Cross.

But Elizabeth I would need to be removed as she was an English Queen.

I'd personally rather see famous Prime Ministers as leaders instead of Royals - Maybe Churchill and Thatcher (not saying I agree with their politics but they are famous British leaders).

EDIT: Oh and I know it says 1 post by my name but thats because I lost my original username/password - I've played Civ since CIV1 but hadn't touched it for about six months.

Copied from the other whine thread about the English civ:

England is the dominant power on the British Isles and it's no surprise people from acrosss history have used British and English to refere to the whole chain of islands.

It's no different than the dominence Prussia and Austria had over Central Europe, or would you rather have them change Germany to Prussia (can't have the old Prussians Frederick and Bismarck hogging the game), add in Austria (again), Baden, Hesse, Bavaria and the rest of the German duches?

I'd personally rather see famous Prime Ministers as leaders instead of Royals - Maybe Churchill and Thatcher (not saying I agree with their politics but they are famous British leaders).

And Elizabeth and Victoria are even more famous Britains.

Firaxis want to reduce the number of 20th century leaders, Thatcher as much as I love her, hardly merits being propped up as one of the greatest leaders of Britain/England, Churchill... lets just say he did as much harm as good for his Empire. Whats wrong with Royals? They've dominated English politics for centuries (sad they've been al but neutered in their role)

BTW I'm of proud Scottish decent, but I have no problem admiting who the true power of Britain has always been.

A few years ago I was talking to a Washington DC policeman, who suddenly asked me: "Are you English or British?".

I'm Australian.

lol

Oh and I've personally got no problem with the civ being English - I'm English and proud of it but I just don't like the idea of monarchy and one unelected person being head of state - there should be an optionw here the leader changes in modern era when you have democracy.

Anyway, every civ in the game is an empire. Just so as not to offend. But obviously it did! I suppose it can be modded. Anyway, the notion of an American empire scares me a little more

Aye, maybe a mod would solve it for me. I don't mean to sound all bitter & twisted.

Anyway, MY Scottish Empire, small though it is, is doing what it's always done - keeping The Romans out. :crazyeye:

"Britons" would be better than "English" or "British", I think. "Britons", in addition to including everyone on the British Isles, has the added advantage of including everywhen on the British Isles, from the Brythonic Celts to the Anglo-Saxons to modern Scots, Welsh, English and Irish. Boudicca would have been a good leader for that purpose.

Theres been more wars between that lot than is worth counting, english and irish have been "at war" for well over 100 years, therefore i disagree

ok dont know if anyone pointed this out as i have not read all the posts but you can change the name of the empire when you start the game.

You can put in your name, make it the British empire, make the people Scottish instead of english ect. Yes it is sorta wrong but meh, easy to change ;)

Sure, but the Greeks had lots of wars between themselves too, and they're represented as once Civ. You can say the same of the Japanese, China, India, Germany, the Arabs and civs in previous games like the Celts, the Scandinavians and the Zulu. That's not stopped any of them from being included.

If I as the English I always change the name in British. I did that since Civ2 (can't remember if it was possible in Civ1 on my Amiga...).

true but i guess it's more of the lumping in of the Irish that I did not like, they have not been part fo Great britain ever as far as I know
