English Language

Hello, I just purchased CivIV and FINALLY got it installed. However, one thing I can tell right away is that the game is completely in German -- completely. There seem to be no English-language files I can switch to.
This is driving me insane.
Can anybody tell me where I can get -- or even email me: let me know and I will post my address -- the English-language files? Please note I have a full version of the game and am not asking for any cracks or freebies, I just want to overwrite the German with English.

Excuse me, but wasn't you asked for language preferences during the installation? Can't remember myself but I am pretty sure that you have several languages to choose from when you install the game... If you say you have a licensed version of CIV I would be very surprised to know that you have it only in German.

go to the options menu and change it to english

I can't help but notice that the OP's location is given as Germany...

There are two steps necessary:

To have the audio in english you have to reinstall and choose 'english' as your language.

To change in-game texts to english go to the options menu and select english.

I guess just like in Holland, some companies decide that Germans appreciate games in their native language, since English could be too hard for the majority of people and therefore offer the possibility to fully enjoy the game. They don't consider the handful of people who do appreciate the original version over a localized one (regardless of how good of a job has been done localizing). That's why I always order my games/DVDs online from an English shop.

Sorry for the rant and not giving you a straight answer to your problem at hand. Perhaps you could try and reinstall, so you might be able to switch languages during setup (like someone already said).

Yes, I purchased the game in Germany, from a German online software shop; there was a picture of the cover and the description read "Original Sid Meyer's Civilization IV", and the cover of the box looked to be English. When I received it, everything was in German.
I must, if you say, have overlooked something dreadfully obvious if there was a chance of having everything (but the manual) in English. I don't know if this is one of those cheap software liscenses which only licenses one language, but I thought that it must be, because I did not see that option. But I will then try to reinstall when I get home.
