English Strategy Discussion

Thanks again for the tips guys. I have exams coming up, so I haven't had any time to put them into practice, but I'm sure I'll sneak in a game soon.

Very random question:

Historically, Britain engineered control of Egypt to get access to the Suez Canal and secure the shortest route to India (and the oil reserves of the Middle East). In the game, is it actually quicker to get to India via Egypt, or is the route around the Cape of Good Hope? I ask because I wonder if the route via the Suez being shorter could give an added incentive to invade or control Egypt. Typically, I avoid that area of the world, because "why wouldn't I?".

I really like how DoC gives you more incentive to play historically.

Remember that the Mediterranean is full of Coast so it's not actually much faster even if that route has fewer tiles. No reason whatsoever to get your oil from Abadan either when Calgary is so much better. Very limited incentive to colonize the Middle East as England

Yeah, doesn't coast cost more movement points to move through? Why is that?

EDIT: With Galleon Coast costs 1 movement and Ocean costs 0.5. Where is this defined? In the Terrain XML it says they're both 1.

EDIT2: Found it CvPlot::movementCost

Rhye made Ocean cheaper to move through so Euro civs could send units to Asia and America without taking the whole game, but he didn't want to also make it so you could sail from Athens to Rome in one turn with a Galley

Perhaps give a 1/4 cost reduction on coast if a ship is able to move through ocean?

This is what I thought. Not sure the scramble for Africa (apart from South Africa) makes much sense from a British perspective in the game. Maybe there is some incentive from the corporations, but North America is a much more accessible, much more bountiful land.

Perhaps if I didn't play with the foreknowledge that the USA would spawn, losing the 1st British empire when they do arrive would spur me to seeking oil etc elsewhere, as happened in real life.

If you're playing for the UHV you can just win before Combustion so it's really not an issue

Of course Star15389.

Sometimes I enjoy playing for the immersion too though. I really like how DoC encourages you to face historical challenges but still leaves you enough scope to come up with your own solutions.
