error keep shutting me down

HELP!!!!!!! i have been playing civ III and PTW since they came out...lately however i cannot keep the game running. i get error messages along the lines of "civilization III has cause an error in sound.dll" the program will now close. if you continue to have this problem, try restarting your computer.
re-starting, or unstalling and re-installing have not helped. i still get error messages about 10 minutes into play.
i have downloaded patches 121f (for civ III) and 127f for PTW and installed them...no difference

any suggestions or direction will be greatly appreciated, this is my favorite game

Well, I'm glad you tried restarting

Do you have a soundcard or onboard sound? You might have a corrupted file - try reinstalling the soundcard drivers.

thanks fo r the suggestion...this last time i played, i got the error message "civilazion 3 has caused an error in civilization3.exe and will now shut down" it too suggests restarting the computer, which does NOTHING to solve the problem

i uninstalled and re-installed the game again, along with patch 129...i am getting vey cranky bout this.
