Hi, it's my first time attempting to play a GOTM, and I've looked over all the FAQ and followed instructions, but I can't get the .sav to load. I am running regular civ v. 1.29f but when I try to load a GOTM save, it says "not a valid save file". Any idea what the problem could be? Thanks for your help.

Have you installed the extra files needed to cope with the PtW civs? If not look at this link if you are running windows or look at the bottom of the post linked for AlanH's mac installer.

Hello, welcome to the Civ Fanatics and to GOTM :wavey:

The invalid file error usually happens if you try to open a PtW game in vanilla CivIII 1.29f. The GOTM 40 game description page includes two links for each player class, one for 1.29 and one for PtW. Make sure you are downloading the 1.29f one.

Tone is correct i warning you that you also need to make sure you have installed the add-ons that allow 1.29f to handle the extra civs and units in GOTMs. There are links in my signature for both Windows and Mac installers.

I re-installed the GOTM mod and double checked that I have the right .savs... still getting the error message. Is there anything else that could be wrong? Thanks again

Are you sure you have Civ version 1.29f? Check the information shown in the bottom left corner of the main menu screen in an unmodded copy of CivIII. Unfortunately you can't tell which version you have *after* installing the mod, as it is overwritten by the installer.

If I had previously installed a mod, which I don't think I did, would this interfere with the GOTM mod?

It depends what the other mod was, but a mod is unlikely to produce the Invalid File error. I'm pretty sure that is flagged when the software can't recognise the version number of the save. That's why I said I thought you must be trying to load the PtW save, or trying to use an earlier version of CivIII than 1.29b2.
