Errors in city's names?

I think that some cities' names in the game are wrong examples:
Emerita in Portugal-Portugal never had a city named Emerita. Actually Emerita was a roman city in Iberia called Emerita Augusta,
and Emerita Augusta is now called Mérida, and is in Spain
Salamanca in Iroquois-Correct me if I'm wrong but Salamanca is a a city in the north of Spain (last weekend I was there) not a city in America.
If you had found another error tell me plaese

No, IN the original game there was not Spain, and that city was the Iroquois' capital

Emerita was the ancient capital of Lusitania.
But if you go that way, I need to said this: There are cities that should be there and other don't.

In Portuguese:

É o seguinte: Emerita é sem duvida em Espanha como Badajoz. Contudo a 1ª foi a antiga capital do territorio lusitano e a 2ª foi Portuguesa, que se encontrava fora do n/ rectangulo territorial (suspiro). Por outro lado falta cidades como: Bragança, Setúbal, Beja, Funchal, ... e outras.

Salamanca is still a strange name for Iroquis, as I only knew the Spanish city.

SALAMANCA, NY - The City of Salamanca lies within the Allegheny Reservation of the Seneca Nation of Indians. It is the only city in the U.S. to lie entirely within native lands.

The Seneca Nation is one of the original five Native nations of the Haudensaunee ("People of the Longhouse"). This confederacy is believed to have formed in 1570. After many years of negotiation the Tuscarora Nation joined the confederacy in 1729. The French called the confederacy members (collectively) the Iroquois, the British named them the Six Nations. One more thing: Sumer and Babylon share some city names now. e.g. "UR" What happens when both are in a game???

BTW, if you are playing Iroquois and Spain in the same game Salamanca can't be founded by the Spanish because Salamanca is Iroquois' capital

Asturias appears as a city in the spanish city list, but it's not OK. It's the name of a province witch capital is Oviedo.

Hmmm. I' ve never heard at Turkey that it's called Edrine. Maybe it might be its old name but don't think so. Or it might be called by foreigners like that because of spelling.

No, Edrine is the Turk name for former Adrianople I think and still exists

I've never seen it spelt "Edrine" outside of civ, and I've got a collection of atlases that all spell it "Edirne". Google lists 191k hits for the later, all I checked refering to the city, while the former has about 700 hits, none of those I checked refering to the city.

Still, given the etymology, I would not be terribly surprised to learn that "Edrine" is an older Turkish form.

The Japanese city list includes both Edo and Tokyo, which, of course, are the same city.

There are quite a few duplicates between various city lists, including the triple Byzantium-Constantinople-Istanbul, but this is hard to avoid given the selection of civs.

The Scandinavian city list includes a number of names I can't recognize, and I'm a Swede ... . Of course, it also lacks an entire collection of umlauts. Damn diacritic-allergic anglopones!

The Chinese list features a weird mix of transliteration systems - if you've got Beijing, you ought to have Nanjing; conversely, if you've got Nanking, you ought to have Peking.

Satsuma in the Japanese list isn't a town but a district.

Zimbabwe, the Zulu capital, of course was never a Zulu city. Indeed, it was abandoned centuries before the Zulu kingdom was founded.

Khurasan in the Arabic list is, strictly speaking, a region, today divided between Iran and Turkmenistan, with smaller bits in Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. More commonly spelt Khorasan in the Latin alphabet.

The Sumerian list, inexplicably, includes a city called Sumer. Oddly enough it also includes Anshan, an ancient city in the Iranian province of Fars (Greek: Persis) which was never under Sumerian control, and Babil, which is of course only a degreekified version of Babylon.

They are rather easy to change.

How about a collective effort to correct them and send them afterwards to Tavis/Firaxis?

Good idea!
I really would like to have all names as they are spelled in their original language. Well, using latin characters of course, so there have to be some compromises...
Sorry for the Germans (ÄÖÜß), Spanish, Russians, Greek, Japanese, Chinese ....

By the way... Leaders could be corrected then as well....

Some civs have only two-three leadernames. I already spawned "Dumnorix" 3 times...hehe...

For those not speaking German: Dumnorix sounds like "dumm" which is the german word for stupid or silly. It would be Stupidix then...



I will start next Wednesday and make some pics where to find the files.

Everyone can help - especially Japanese and Chinese are needed, the optimum would be someone for every Civ.

We should however stick to the ENGLISH names for cities, e.g. Munich instead of München.

We can also do Citynames in the proper language, no problem to do it twice - it is really not too much work!

I just depend on help, there are also very difficult cases like the Zulu who did not built any major cities at all.


I will ask for help in a few days again, and start work. Anyone who wants to help can of course start correcting names right now.
