[NFP] Ethiopia Update Discussion Thread

It's an optional mode and not the centerpiece of the dlc so you don't have to use it. I will probably be using it every game because it looks like great fun.
The thing is that I do want to play the mode, it looks fun and interesting. I just don't want vampires, specially when other real life groups with those same abilities would make more sense. I know also that probably a mod could take care of that issue, but it should be the other way around (a real assasin society of some sorts and then a mod that change them to vampires). The problem is not the mechanics, is the form they take to play be played in game.

There are other real life groups that can teleport and are immortal?

Not to mention it’s not terribly unrealistic, and if you don’t like them cuz they’re unrealistic, there’ll probably be mods to rename them for you.
I'd also note that the Giant Death Robots are themselves controversial (as well as coming to late to be relevant in most games). I'd much prefer a realistic-ish approach to near future military units, and I doubt I'm the only one.

I usually win games before i or anyone else build them lol

No, of course not, but in another thread a poster explained it like this: retreat to the lair with 1 point of life could mean the stealthiness of assasins, and transporting from lair to lair could represent underground tunnels used to move fast without detection. As I said, it is not the mechanics, it's the form itself.

I'm not lighting a torch and heading for the castle gates, but I'm wondering how much of this season pass I bought will be stuff that I won't turn on. Not interested in soothsayers, vampires, irradiated zombies, or ley lines. I kinda feel like that's somewhat justified since previous games didn't drift this far into the fantastical. I'll pull out the old "I'd prefer they'd get existing elements to work better before introduce wacky new stuff" line, because I am sorta feeling that way.
It's not like they didn't tell you in advance that they'd be doing more fantasy stuff with the game modes. That's why they can be turned off, for the people who don't want that in their game. The Civ franchise has always had a loose definition of history; it's not like this is the first time.

Honestly everyone's complaining about the vampires and I'm here thinking it sounds like the most fun secret society and I can't wait to try it out :mischief:

That said, I can definitely see the arguments of those who dislike the more wacky/fantasy aspects and are disappointed the three updates we've had so far are Apocalypse Mode, Zombies and Aliens, and now Secret Societies with vampires. The 'you can just turn it off' argument isn't entirely fair since these are major components of the paid-for DLC and so I can see why those who don't enjoy those elements in their game are feeling put out. They have said that some of the Game Modes will be more historical in flavour, so I'm surprised they didn't choose to intersperse one of those with this initial bunch of somewhat fantastical modes.

so your problem with it is the name of the SS, something that can be ignored, is barely relevant to the gmae and doesn’t matter? seems like you’re just reaching for a reason to whine

Moderator Action: Please do not characterize other member's motives as in your last sentence. Civility please. leif

Finally getting around to the video. I am not hearing anything that tells me that the "old" way of getting city states and their bonus are gone completely, more like it's a bit of a slight nerf in a sense.

Yeah, basically it's just the name, the animation of the unit with the blood and the graphics of the lair that I don't like, you are correct. The rest of the update seems fine to me, I'm eager to try them, but I don't think it "doesn't matter" how a part of the game is presented besides the mechanics

Another thing, I don't think you should say to me I'm "reaching" for a reason to "whine". We all here can say what we want about the game, what we like, dislike and would like to see changed, you too. So I don't know why instead of talking about the points I made you try to invalidate me or something? I haven't trashed the developers nor any other person here, I respect how you feel about the mode and would like for you to see how things could've been better from the perspective of people who didn't liked the vampires with just a single change that woulnd't change the core of the mode and could make ir more appealing. I'm not "whining", I'm expressing how I feel about one thing they presented. I am still going to play the game with friends and buy it, but now I can't talk about what I like or dislike about it? In a discussion thread?

Apparently Russian writers, artists, and musicians according to this game. :mischief:

it’s a game where debates are visualized by lightning bolts. you’re nitpicking at tiny things like a name and a combat animation

turn on the day/night animation and your problems with the vampires will be solved

Unless they sparkle like the ones in Twilight during the day. :shifty:

And the entire Incan people apparently.
I don't follow. Unless you are talking about building Terrace farms from the beginning of the game?
Never mind it's their early mountain tunnel.

The qapaq nan acts as a pseudo-teleport across mountains lol.

It seems to me that the devs have succumbed to the sin of self-indulgence. I can imagine them sitting round a table at one of those meetings where everyone is supposed to call out the first thing that comes into their head, while one guy writes it all down on a whiteboard. So one person calls out "vampires" and another one "Cthulhu!" and no-one is tasked with asking the question, "how does this fit into the Civilisation franchise?" Next thing you know, one of the civs down the line will be Fairyland, led by Tinkerbell, because, why not?

Meanwhile, there's no word of fixing bugs or finally finishing Worldbuilder.

Also, why the devil does France need THREE leaders (Catherine x 2 + Eleanor) when most civs have only one?

i might be completely off base, but isn’t it possible that the rock hewn church we saw in the video is the Church at Lalibela wonder?

something about the scale throws me off, as it seems too large to be an improvement, which usually seem smaller.

and i don’t think there were multiple at any point, so it would appear that it could be the wonder
there's a moment in the video where you see multiple churches present at the same time in different cities so i believe is ethiopia's ui
