Ethiopian Chronicles

As my first story (Mother-Russia) ended, I decided to start another one. This time I have chosen the great scenario The Desert and the Mountain - Empires of Africa by Plotinus. This scenario (IMHO word “mod” is more suitable here) has always been one of my favorites, for a wonderful combination of historical details with interesting and unpredictable gameplay.

This is story of Ethiopia – East African civilization with long, rich and glorious history. And this is me – Emperor Amda Siyon, King of Kings, Defender of the Orthodox Faith, Solomonid.

Game settings: Emperor level, Normal AI Aggression.

House rules: no house rules here, but I’ll try to survive (not so easy in this scenario, btw) and reach the cultural victory:

This story will be written as series of royal memoirs (one emperor – one chapter). Please, don’t expect any literary qualities, because English is not my native language. Also, I’m sorry in advance for all future errors and roughness…

So, we start…

Chapter 1
Amda Siyon I The Loser (1000 – 1020 AD)

Today is 1000 AD and My Majesty begin this chronicle for teaching and edification of future generations. Let them know about the greatness of Ethiopian people, the wisdom of their Emperor, and the infinite mercy of our God.

To begin, I must tell you something about my country. That’s the map of Ethiopia at the year 1000 Anno Domini.

Now, after you've seen the greatness of my country, I’ll tell you about current events, about my wise decisions and their implications.

In 1000 AD, We ordered our wise men to study Quiyanw, that allows us to create the new Quiyanw Warrior in addition to those we have today.

1002 AD. Horrible news! Jewish rebels captured our port city Adulis and Gabaza Harbour. The more: they have declared their independence from Ethiopia and our Adulis became their capital. That was the greatest shock for me and my courtiers.

In this year, our warriors faced with strange peaceful people, call themselves Alwah.

1004 AD. Jews lost 1 unit in positional battle near our capital. At the same time, southern infidels were seen on our borders. They move north, to our cities!

1006 AD. We lost 2 units of Quiyanw Warrior. More and more numerous Muslim hordes are moving to our cities. The common people and the clergy are in panic.

1008 AD. We has discovered the Quiyanw. Enemy’s attempts to capture Axum and Roha failed. Enemies regroup.

1010 AD. The greatest Muslim army we ever seen, prepared for battle. I tried to engage them in talks, I promised them to even convert to Islam for just peace treaty. I’m not a coward, but… 6 units of Arabian Archer (3/1/1) and 2 units of Arabian Spearmen (1/2/1). It’s more than all of my army! Oh my God, why have You forgotten me?

1012 AD. Enemies everywhere. It looks like I'll be the last Ethiopian emperor.

10Enemies.jpg

1014 AD. Thank you, Lord! You gave the tenfold force to our warriors! How else to explain the two failed attempts of assault (Roha and Avalites), despite even the enemy’s numerical superiority? Of course, many of our warriors have also gone to Heaven. But Ethiopia is saved (for the next 10-15 years, at least)!

1016 AD. Successful positional battles continues... Our wise men discovered the idea of Horsemanship. Thus, now we can build the new type of units called Meqennet Rider (2/1/2). We could build it, to be correct, if we had horses, But we haven’t.

1020 AD. Another 2 units of Qest Warrior were lost near Axum, but country is completely cleared of the enemy (for the first time since beginning of my rule).

I am no longer young, I ruled for 20 heavy years, and my time is over (so said my court doctors). As you know, each emperor receives the posthumous name. Some of my predecessors were known as “The Great” “The Winner”, “The Conqueror”. Some were “The Builder” or “The Pious”. Two questions disturb me on my deathbed. First, what name would give me my descendants? And second: do I really want to know it?
