I was curious if anyone knows if each civ's units including non-unique were going to represent the proper skin tone of their people? It's BS that a game this popular and old has never done this in the past.

From screenshots, it seems units will have ethnic variants this time around.

It's a shame they won't speak each civ's language as in Civ IV though. Civ IV had ethnically diverse units as well as units that actually spoke a language. :(

Honestly, I'd rather they invest the voice acting budget in leaders than units. Civ5's voice actors were pretty hit-and-miss, but both TR and Cleopatra sounded quite good.

Errr they did it in Civ 4 actually.

Will certain countries that are known to be ethnically diverse (ie. United States) have multiple skin toned people from the start or with this happen in the modern era?

Will certain countries that are known to not be ethnically diverse (ie The Koreas that are over 99% Korean) have only one skin colour for the entire game?

I'm curious how they might resolve this.

Wait, the units in IV spoke? I don't remember that?

Every unit in Civ4 speaks in their respective language when you select them.
They're mostly basic voice lines approximating "Understood", "What are your orders" and the like.
Definitely one of the many little details that contributed to the immersion of Civ4.

Here are the units. http://well-of-souls.com/civ/civ6_units.html
Judge for yourself.

We have seen some variation in unit skin color, and a few more specific ethnic unit variations (Asian versions of the swordsman and pikeman). I hope we see more.

That would be a fun detail, but perhaps an overcomplication. And the US was not very diverse for most of its history (especially as regards the military).

And then somebody uploads a screenshots with 2 White Military Units next to a Black Worker Unit and there you go, the Internet explodes. :D

Kongo Civ Reveal
White military and great people units, black workers

jesus... this would be legendarily bad :D

This is why I think they will just go for using basic ethnic blocks for each civ. So even the multiracial Mongolian Empire's units will be all Asian.

It's just easier that way. Then people can't scrutinize why you have more of X race than X other, and how it's historically inaccurate/offensive, etc etc.

Ooooh, you underestimate people. Of course there will be angry bloggers writing about being offended with America being all white.

I do miss this. It added a nice element to the game. Even tho I never understood a word of what was said. :D

Definitely would happen. One only has to look at the offense olympics that goes on at Boardgamegeek over the tiniest little things.

it's easier not to have any variation at all. there's no point committing to variation for the sake of flavour just to arbitrarily cut the variation off at a point because it's 'too difficult' to make it completely accurate. just have everyone as a healthy shade of brown
