Every city looks like Washington DC to me...

I don't mind Romans having Egyptian obeliscs at all, but seeing as Trajan's ability is "Trajans Column" I sort of expected it to look like this:

That said hopefully building graphics can be modded to have ethnic sets, Aztecs and Mayans could use steeles instead of the current monument style for example.

Well they wanted all of the buildings to be universal and thus recognizable. The Monument in particular I wouldn't mind giving some regional flavor to, though.

yeah I dont mind most of the buildings being the same (well only annoyed at the lack of mesoamerican temple) but the monument is at the very center of the city tile, besides the Palace, which actually has distinct ethnic graphics, its hard not to notice it.

Oh, you mean for a Religious Building? Unfortunately, what would they call it? The names "shrine" and "temple" are already used. Chamber? Altar? Dunno.

So, how many obelisks can dance on the head of a pin?

More ethnic flavor to both districts and especially monuments would be very welcome. Perhaps it's something they can either patch in or consider for a future expansion.

Will be modded soon and after a while I will happily use it. I don't mind the universal look to get into the game better and faster... For a while.

Well there is one in Paris (France) too, and much older than the one in DC to be fair (it was Egyptian, from the temple of Louxor, originally). So from my point of view all city center looks like Paris.

But I do agree that some changes depending on the civ you're playing would be nice.

To be honest, I didn't even know there is an obelisk in Washington DC?
I've seen one in Paris, Rome, Vatican City, Istanbul, London and of course Egypt. Didn't know there was one in Washington DC, though. A gift from Napoleon I guess?

Edit:
For people that didn't know (like me), here's the Wikipedia page, it's called the Washington Monument

Edit2:
Not a gift from Napoleon

Unlike most of the obelisk you mentionned (most were gifts or just pillage/stolen) the one is Washington was build by the city. And Unlike most of the other it was built using masonry skills rather than being carved out of a unique stone.

Most cities will have an obelisk somewhere. I'm in the channel islands and we've got one that sits right outside my office.

That said, I'm not sure how this looks like Washington DC....

In Civ IV Monuments always used to look like obelisks. Then they added Unique Buildings for each Civ in Warlords, and Egypt got the Obelisk, and everyone else's Monument became a statue. I think it's ok as it is, but a little extra flavour never hurts. For Shrines, Temples and Monuments it would be nice to see region-specific art work like we get for Palaces and general city art.

How many real civilizations actually have the "monument" thingy in their culture, though? For the Chinese, they could perhaps use a huge rock monument with some unreadable writing on it. But I can imagine it'd be hard to come up with one variation for each civilization.

Come to think of it. How many buildings actually show a cultural variation?

I agree they should have different graphics, even though I appreciate the need to recognize what's in a city at a glance. I wonder if the code even allows for regional variation. I think so long as it's a "tall thin thingy" it should be easily recognizable as a monument.

Only the Palace, as far as I'm aware. It makes sense for readability, but it's perfectly possible to have a bunch of different buildings that are all identifiably Monuments, especially since buildings (especially those in districts) always go in the same slot.

Also they should have regional variation for all the districts. Doesn't have to be super dramatic, just small details.
