This discussion relates to the foreign and military consuls as well as the Expatriate Governor.

We are playing a 5BC game, where we get to keep one city from each AI. However, in order to have some kind of idea which city we want, we need to explore the foreign civ's lands. This requires violating borders for already placed cities.

Do you support doing this? I feel that it is necessary so that we can discuss which city we want should we go to war. We can't know if Paris is worth something without being a little devious. If they don't like it, tough. Who are they to tell Fanatikos where we can and cannot go?

I don't know how to do this without making them furious with us. We must approach that with caution.

Well, if we declare war they will be furious anyway. ;)

I see nothing in the rules that say we can't take foreign city 1, then decide that foreign city 3 is better so keep 3 and abandon 1. Nor do I see any reason why we couldn't take 7 cities from one opponent and none from the other 6. :satan:

The Foreign Affairs department is firmly against any course of action that will lead to war. There are peacefull ways to explore other nations, embassys are one (to see paris atleast).

If there is a hill in/near the Paris radius, we just need to step on it and we'll see their entire city raidus. then they will say get out, and we will leave next turn. :)

I agree, Nobody. We must avoid war until we finish expanding and building up a decent infrastructure. We must not spend our precious and little money in the beginning with expensive and probaly long wars.

First, let's build up a decent defensive military. When we have at least three hoplites in each of our cities we may think about sending some soldiers to Paris.

Let's not forget the value of map trading. Because we are interested in seeing the lay of the land for the purpose of conquering one specific city, it may be well worth the gold to buy someone's territory map!

I agree with RegentMan. Let our brave explorers explore! RegentMan and I plan to live in some of these cities and make our livings there. We need to be able to choose locations for our future homes and workplaces.

If another nation asks us to leave then we will and there will be no lasting harm to our relations with them. They only get upset with us while we are in their territory.

OOC: look up the threads on attitude and reputation. There is a slight ding while we are present in their territory, but it reverts once our units have been outside their borders for a turn.

I'm not sure about three whole units in each city, a mobile defense IMHO would better serve our purposes especially allowing our economy to grow more robust and stronger.

As for the explorers I say let them into their territory they won't auto declare and it'll provide us with vital early land intelligence for future operations and give us different options on how to hinder their own development.

Build fifteen hoplites before exploring France?

I beleve we should tread with caution when dealing with other nations.

Territory maps are very cheap in comparison to world maps. Chances are, the city we want will be one of the first few built by that Civ, so if we just buy a few territory maps, we should be fine

With navigation being the map trading requirement, territory maps are quite a ways away.

We want to know our rivals' lands now, and not on turn 200.

If we build embassies like Nobody said, we could get ROP's with the French. The only problem I see is that for our current gold situation, we would lose a lot of money doing it. I would suggest doing what Greekguy said, go on a hill, find Paris, leave next turn, no permanent damage done to relations. I also was thinking about some other things we could try. Get a costal city and build a curragh, I find that the AI does build a lot of costal cities. We could also wait for Horse Back Riding, build a horsemen and send him to the French. The extra move might allow us to move in, find paris and leave.

This is an emperor game, and on emperor games I always build up a huge defense only to make sure the AI won't take me. We may not build fifteen hoplites, but we need a very solid defense when fighting against any AI. Perhaps we can have a weak defense when exploring them, but simply exploring the french can lead to a serious war and we may have some french troops in our territory. Besides, this is 5BC, so we won't have any problems in defending large territorial extensions. We need to defend small portions of land with a very large number of soldires, so even when the hoplite becomes obsolete we can have solid defenses in our territory.
