Expansive Dreams

Thanks, What I do is send it in one direction for 5 turns, then turn, always going at least 7 tiles.

so: What do you guys reckon?

Don't like all those plains of various kinds. Will be hard to feed them all.

In place or 1S. Don't mind which really. In place? Food > Hammers > Commerce as my order of priorities really.

Beware barbs and animals on monarch - there alot more active early on. Ending movement on hills or forests becomes much more important with the scout.

4000 B.C.E. Shaka Charles Rises to the Throne

The new Zulu Empire, after incorporating hundreds of smaller tribes to settle, was almost ready to form when Shaka Granddad suddenly had an heart attack: His last words is that there will be seven Monarchs Spirits, and their souls will cycle in the dynastic future.

Shaka Charles, only 12 at the time, became the First Monarch.

ulundiisfound.png

He ordered his men to settle the Great City of Ulundi, and decided to mine the hills instead of harvesting the grain to produce a Worker Group, for he saw that the people train faster with tools of stone than with trial and error of generations. However, even their higher proficiency with tools wasn’t worth it for it didn’t make a big enough difference, so he returned to using the first method.

(It took 23 turns with the Corn and 30 turns with the hill, so the Corn it is, at least until we get more land to work with.)

After a group of friendly villages migrated to the capital, being a small, but rich tribe, Shaka Charles realized how important the improved tools can be, and ordered the further improvement of these tools for faster production of Worker Groups.

Hundreds of years later, they found another village, lead my a mystic. Almost dying, and riverly already fuming, he taught our scouts all he knew about nature, the spirits and the ultimate powers of the Dieties, the gods. Charles happily consumed the knowledge, knowing it would be needed for the future.

As the Zulus wandered out from their capital, a huge tribe of bears formed a minor pack, driven out by the relatively heavy population, they sought to fight harder for their food… Charles hoped his scouts won’t be it’s next meal. A small tribe was also incorporated, and they, as with the others, shared freely with their knowledge, this time of their surroundings. Charles decided to head south, then turn back along the coasts.

01newtools.png

Soon, they learned the new tools of Mining, and discovered some stones, when melted, mix together into a strong, shiney substance. Shaka Charles orders the investigation of the use of these substances immediately. The scouts are ordered to turn east.

Another Civilization, lead by the Ashoka Dynasty, arrived! Bearing advanced arms Shaka Charles looked not in fear but in defiance: Their capital is trapped 15 tiles from another one, with the sea behind and land in three sides: they will win!

As he lays in his death bed his whispers, “The next Shaka will see a new age!”

Ok guys, In Summary:

Meet Ashoka.
Found that I have to work the Corn before the Wooded hill: about 8 turns left for the worker: it is rounded up. BTW +50% isn't strong enough for worker bonus because it doesn't work on food, and in the early game most worker production comes from food.

Got Mystism, Map and gold Pop.

Will try to pop the other village before ash: we are at the corner of a piece of land.

Go Pigswell!

NIce work from what I can see ATM. When I get home i'll check out the save.

Looks like we can get a nice early commerce city with the fish/dye/gems site (between the gems and the dye).

I like the Myst from the hut. It can be an annoying early tech if you want to expand but need to get those worker techs.

Got it.

Looks pretty straightforward atm. Finish worker, farm corn then build mines, build warriors to explore/fogbust, get to pop 5,start spitting out settlers and workers.

Probably play 21 turns up to BW if that's ok with the team.

Yeah, Go Shaka Pigswell, 2nd in the Shaka Zulu Dynasty! :P (You don't have to follow my storyline of course!)

BTW, I got that extra hammer from the Forested hill asap when the borders poped. If you mine that riverside hill that is 8 Hammer >>10 hammers when working on a worker.

Go for it pigswill. up to BW is fine.

Nice work charles on the micro for switching tile usage ASAP. It sthe kind of thing i forget if I'm not carefull.

Whipping settlers in to workers should work well here with the 2 corns.

Very nice start Charles...

Well scouted and you popped some good huts.
Your first foray into Monarch was a success!

@Pigswill: I am eyeing the land to the north of us as potential sites for our first couple of cities.
Could you scout out the area around the two rivers to our north?
You are on your way to grabbing the goodie hut anyways.

Spoiler :

Both cities would have rivers through alot of their BFCs making for extra commerce.

Okay...I realize the green city has no resources that we can see.
But it does have 4 floodplains and five hills currently visible with 5 mystery tiles.
I like the production capabilities of that city even without a resource visible.

The red dot could be a pretty good commerce city with enough just enough production for us to work with. Grabbing those early happy resources like gold will be helpful because every extra happy we have is an extra mine we can work in the capital.
Lots of grasslands here too.

I realize its too early to be making dotmaps...but I am just trying to emphasize why I would like pigswill to scout in that direction.

That northern site (floodplains) would make an ok early gp farm with some decent production for a second military city as well. We'd probably want a better gp farm before to long but we might get one or two GPs out of it if we got a Lib in there fast. At size 6 (happy cap with gems and gold) we can be working 12 hammers with 2 food over for whipping or a spec.

1N of the nearest gems would be an ok commerce site as well. You could work some of the tiles the capital isn't using , i.e. the NW grasslands and plain.

Sorry about the stupid image issue.

If there is food near the northern stone/gold site that would make a good potential 2nd city spot. Once pigswill has revealed copper and we have a little more scouting, we'll be in a better place to figure out city placement.

The reign of Shaka Pigswill was brief and uneventful though quite friendly.

Friendly villagers share the secrets of the Harley Davidson (well, not quite a Harley but wheels). Friendly scouts volunteer to feed the lions. Friendy fate gives sudden insights into bronze working (26 beakers worth). Friendly Koreans are located to the north.

Friendly copper is located to the west.
ed1a0000.jpg

Hard working worker has farmed some corn and is farming some more.

Low on hammers but high on food gives rapid growth though not many warriors.

Looks like build a settler, settle the copper site, build/whip a bunch of axes and city#3 is Seoul.

Not very friendly but often quite effective.

Nice, as far as I can see the Plains Hill will make a strong 2nd City, with Corn and Stone. And !!! Bronze in Begining Culture Borders! BCB!

However, the closer Grassland hill will let it share the finished corn farm.

I say the Plains, the new tiles will show the power of Expansive! Rawr!

Got it.

I will be settling the plains hill SW of the copper and then cranking some military unless there are objections. I can play tonight, but I'll wait a few hours in case anyone has feedback or wants to propose alternate plans.

20 turns played. Not too eventful:

Inherited turn: Revolt to slavery, set tech to AH. We don't have any resources that need to be husbanded, but I want to see where the horses are.

My plan is to get a city-founding team of an escort, a 2nd worker, and a settler.

t40 3000BC - WK adopts Slavery

t41 2975BC - A forest has popped near the capital.

t50 2750BC - Our latest warrior conscript was scouting the desert and was destroyed by a Lion - vicious beasts here.

AH is in, set research to Pottery. Personally I feel like I sometimes wait too long on Archery, but I think we'll have axes pretty fast so hopefully its not a mistake.

There are no nearby horses; there are two visible to the west and north near Korea.

t51 2725 - Hinduism FIDAL. Also some guy compiles a list of the wealthiest civs

civ_ed_1_report.JPG

At the end of my set, I've got the 2nd worker and escort ready, having chopped one hilltop tree. We're 10 turns from a naturally produced settler, but we've got a 2nd tree falling in 2 turns, and the capital is coming off whip anger in 3 turns (at pop 4). I've contributed virtually nothing to our worldview except a few tiles to the northeast since our scouting warrior was gobbled so quickly.

Next player up can get our 2nd city founded and get the war machine cranking. If we found on the hill we'll need culture to get the corn so I would chop a monument while we're hooking up the copper.

Well with the exception of some dying scouts I think we are off to a pretty good start team!

I like very much the idea of axerushing the Koreans.
From what we can see of Seoul I think it is very good.
5 flood plains, 3 hills, 1 crab and 1 wine...sad when wine is the least desirable tile of the group huh?
Plus 11 more as yet undiscovered tiles...10 if you don't count the city tile.

If we can get one or even two more good food resources in Seouls BFC then we will have ourselves quite a nice GP farm indeed! Its a capital so I have high hopes for grassland pigs and fishies!

Now concerning the axe rush...I am no master at that skill.
How many do you think we will need given that Wang Kon is a protective leader?
I am guessing at least 9 assuming that he has 3 archers defending.

I would suggest Iron Working for the tech after pottery.
I think it would be nice to hook up the gems from city #2 for a size 6 capital that can generate 16:hammers: per turn.
Plus we could score some iron in Ulundi's BFC (fingers crossed for 2 E of the citysquare)

Looks like cripp is up...good luck to you!
