I strongly disagree! Consider what things were like in the ancient world -- Alexander the Great, for example, conquered all the way out to India. India could've had some intermittent contact with China, either across the mountains or around the SE Asian peninsula. China would have contact with Japan across the small sea there. And you could have everyone in contact with each other before the end of the BCE's! I've had things like this happen plenty of times during game play.

Heck, even Marco Polo's expedition in the 1200's didn't result in much official contact at the time... it took a few hundred more years for the direct trade with China and Japan to develop.

I just realized one REALLY interesting possibility here... the reselling of resources! Take a real world map, and if you're playing the Arabs, you can make a killing buying multiple batches of silks and spices from India or China and passing them on to the European countries! Since there's no way to contact other countries (aside from physical exploration) prior to getting the Printing Press, there's going to be a lot less trade in those early eras. I wonder if there's any way to mod the ability to purchase more than one unit of a resource into the game? (Or maybe someone's already done it already? ;)) I have a feeling that the computer may not engage in that practice too much, but it would be a really fun option for the multiplayer games!

MinutiaeMan, unfortunately once you have one of a resource, more of the same type don't show up in the diplomacy screen (in vanilla or PTW).

:-D I knew from hearing this that it would change the dynamics of the game. Although doesn't it slow the tech pace a lot during the early years? I find it goes slow enough as it is. I'm slightly worried that without trading contacts the tech pace may slow too far.

Slow at it is? The space race in my games begins around 1300 A.D... that's not very realistic.

I never build knights, because the cavalry is available before my first knight is completed...

I'll pitch in and say I think this is a brilliant/exciting change....and I can't wait to experience it.

Most of my fun in this game happens during the early 'exploration phase...and these changes drag that out! :)

.I wonder if Printing Press/Navigation will be required to leave the middle ages now...

...and I wonder how much priority the AI will put on printing press now...going for printing press in high difficulty games before typically resulted in a monopoly for the player and a good way to catch up in tech (through trade).

...now if they could just make polytheism more useful....

This would be way to powerful. If you get explorers before anybody else, and you find a new continent with your carracks, you can gain a ton of land, without any cities. If this was applicable, then why not let all terrain your troops are on belong to you (thereby deleting the need for a right of passage). It's jsut too powerful. Good idea historically though.

True, but at one square per turn it wouldn't go very fast. Once enemy civs establish cities there your "claimed" cultural borders will be pushed back as normal, perhaps even faster because there are no cities to generate culture.

Maybe there could be an option to claim rights to a certain strip of land but not to actually own it. Then these strips could be exchanged in the trade menu like cities. It would bring an intresting new dynamic to the game, methinks, being able to shape borders, etc.

As you said, maybe not a whole continent, but rather pieces of it could be claimed.
An option to this matter that I though, was that the explorers could also become a "colony", just like the workers and take the piece of land surrounding the square where the colony is developed (loosing the explorer of course)... maybe this colony could serve as a fort or eventually develop into a full grown city??
it could be a good option and support a historical event....

These changes are huge. The exploration phase of the game will last much much longer. Ongoing exploration will be important vs. allowing the AIs to handle it. At high difficulty levels it may take longer to catch up to the AIs - we can no longer leverage communications and maps to do it in Ancient Times, we'll have to find other ways. Tech brokering is going to become a very important skill. OCC games are going to be much harder. Map Making will be less important and therefore we may have to learn it ourselves (because probably the AI can no longer be counted on to fixate on Map Making :) ) We'll see greater extremes in the strength of the other Civs on any given map because they won't all meet quickly and then balance out due to reduced tech values. It will be harder to foment distant AI wars early in the game. And there's probably a lot more I haven't thought of here. This is going to be interesting...

SirPleb: I had not even thought of the early use of comm/map trading. On the higher diificulty levels, this was a key to keeping up/outpacing the AI!

..and I agree on the varying strenths of the AI! Finally, the AI may be drastically differnt in techs/power from each other!

...getting tingly with excitement.... ;)

Wow. Huge stuff there. This means you'll be in the dark until late Middle Ages, and you can't trade contacts until Printing Press?

Not sure if I like this. This will slow tech trading, for sure, but it will also empower the Expansionist trait...I guess its alright.

The AI will certainly research faster, but they won't be able to make frenzied trades each step of research. The AI will still outpace you but probably has fewer contacts, so it may not be quite as bad as first imagined.

Besides, pointy stick research may become more effective if your opponent can't dogpile the world on you in the middle of the ancient age. Just don't let the civs on either side of you ever meet each other :p .

What techs do you think you need for Temple of Artemis or the Mausoleum?

Okay, okay, this is too cool. I give up. I wasn't going to buy C3C for a few months, but betwen the exploit fixes and the exploration changes I'm probably going to buy it ASAP. There goes my November...
And December, and January, and... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
;)

"It will be harder to foment distant AI wars early in the game" > I know. And it is so sad... :(

Not really sad, just makes it all a little bit harder.. :D

To sum it all up: Even if I have to wait anther 10 days for it, I already love it!

[o Map Trading requires [Navigation]
o Communications Trading requires Printing Press

I look forward to trying the game with them, I think this was an are that needed work so I am glad that these changes have been made:)
The exploration phase of the game will last much much longer
Which is always good, I find exploring to be one of the best parts of the game:goodjob:
