I can't remember if helicopters used to move the way that other air units did, but they don't now.

Are air units now simply ground units with pretty icons? Gack....

Or maybe helicopters are just treated as ground units since they're MUCH closer to being ground forces than air forces even in real life? That's how 95% of the Civ3 mods implemented them.

Good lord some of the complainers around here are grasping at straws.

And some of the fanbots are too... ;) It goes both ways...and that is what makes it fun! :)

Helicopters may operate close to the ground...but they are definately not ground units.

I don't care how Ci3 mods treated them, I was hoping for an improved air combat model this time around. Not saying their isn't one ...or is one. No info has been released yet. But this is disappointing if the chopper is simply a fancy ground unit as the screenie suggests.

I have to disagree... a helicopter would function more properly with ground type actions

How am I grasping at straws? It's far more accurate to model a helicopter as a ground unit than it is to model one as an air unit. This has nothing to do with how close to the ground they move and everything to do with the role a helicopter fills vs the role a tank or infantry unit fills vs the role a fighter or bomber fills. Helicopters do not fit into any air combat model. They do not bomb targets (ie they aren't bombers) and do not prevent the enemy from bombing targets (ie they aren't fighters). Helicopters exist A) to engage enemy ground units, and B) to transport troops and supplies into places planes can't reach.

Helicopters, for all intents and purposes, are ground units. Treating them with the same combat model that you use for fighters and bombers would be idiotic.

Well they are called (Air Cavalry) in the U.S. anyway, and work closer with ground units especially tanks and medical personel then any other air unit, so I can see the logic behind it, I hope that not all air units work like this but who knows what the final product will be, I don't think that Firaxis even knows what it will be yet!

The thing that concerns me the most is that we still have modern units going against obsolite ones... or the romans are still in the middle ages (they are last in score)
It's because these reviewers are inexperienced players (especially at civ4!) and are playing at an easy difficulty level, silly!

Since they are doing a REVIEW, it would be foolish of THEM to get frustrated by playing a level they would get squashed at, wouldn't it? How would they get to play with all the toys, then?

Although they still did not play well enough to avoid a town and village getting destroyed by some horses

Well, it's awesome to see that we will have helicopters in the game.

What I want to know is how do other aircraft operate. I sincerely hope they operate more like they do in Civ3 than in Civ2.

Otherwise, did anyone notice the announcement that a town has been destroyed? I guess that's confirmation that we can still raze towns.

Don't know what your talking about, the helicopter is clearly hovering in mid air, you can see its shadow below it in the circle that lit up to say the helicopter is selected.

Carver, that is an outlying TOWN (as in a worked tile that goes from hamlet, village to town) not a CITY. I am certain of that.
.

Agreed 100%, Carver, read the red writing in the box that in the top left corner of the screen. It says;

Enenmy troops spotter NEAR washington
A farm has been destroyed
A town has been destroyed

If you look at the lower left hand corner of the screen, it shows that the "helicopter" seems to work like regular land units. They call it a "gun boat", but the picture is that of the helicopter, the helicopter is selected on the screen, and it shows that the "gun boat" is down one movement point from it's max, suggesting it is moving towards the enemy city.

It seems that at least some air units will be treated like other military units.

Ah, last I heard no ground unit can seamlessly cross large bodies of water (like a lake, river, small sea, etc) and back onto land almost instantly like those ground units you mention. Even infantry, unles they have boas waiting, can't do that. Hence helicopters being -air- units.

I wish the helicopters would be able to move anywhere but take a small HP penalty for each turn they are in the air as in previous Civ/SMAC games. That fully gives them their real utility usage without making them like aircraft or ground units.

EDIT: Oh, and I hope the combat of air units vs. ground units is a bit different because I always hated seeing some jet fighter shot down by a musketman or something because they "fought" hand-to-hand like a cavalry vs. musketmen or soemthing. That was about as bad as the spearman defeating a battleship scenario.

If I recall correctly, it was said that most ground units cannot engage air units - I would take this to mean that muskets and rifles won't be allowed to do damage, but that perhaps in lieu of air support, there will be AA guns/units that can help defend non-air defended cities.
