And some of the fanbots are too...Zurai said:Or maybe helicopters are just treated as ground units since they're MUCH closer to being ground forces than air forces even in real life? That's how 95% of the Civ3 mods implemented them.
Good lord some of the complainers around here are grasping at straws.
I have to disagree... a helicopter would function more properly with ground type actionsoldStatesman said:And some of the fanbots are too...It goes both ways...and that is what makes it fun!

Helicopters may operate close to the ground...but they are definately not ground units.
I don't care how Ci3 mods treated them, I was hoping for an improved air combat model this time around. Not saying their isn't one ...or is one. No info has been released yet. But this is disappointing if the chopper is simply a fancy ground unit as the screenie suggests.
Well they are called (Air Cavalry) in the U.S. anyway, and work closer with ground units especially tanks and medical personel then any other air unit, so I can see the logic behind it, I hope that not all air units work like this but who knows what the final product will be, I don't think that Firaxis even knows what it will be yet!oldStatesman said:And some of the fanbots are too...It goes both ways...and that is what makes it fun!

It's because these reviewers are inexperienced players (especially at civ4!) and are playing at an easy difficulty level, silly!Polietileno said:The thing that concerns me the most is that we still have modern units going against obsolite ones... or the romans are still in the middle ages (they are last in score)
Although they still did not play well enough to avoid a town and village getting destroyed by some horsesJaybe said:It's because these reviewers are inexperienced players (especially at civ4!) and are playing at an easy difficulty level, silly!
Since they are doing a REVIEW, it would be foolish of THEM to get frustrated by playing a level they would get squashed at, wouldn't it? How would they get to play with all the toys, then?![]()

Jaybe said:Carver, that is an outlying TOWN (as in a worked tile that goes from hamlet, village to town) not a CITY. I am certain of that.

Zurai said:How am I grasping at straws? It's far more accurate to model a helicopter as a ground unit than it is to model one as an air unit. This has nothing to do with how close to the ground they move and everything to do with the role a helicopter fills vs the role a tank or infantry unit fills vs the role a fighter or bomber fills. Helicopters do not fit into any air combat model. They do not bomb targets (ie they aren't bombers) and do not prevent the enemy from bombing targets (ie they aren't fighters). Helicopters exist A) to engage enemy ground units, and B) to transport troops and supplies into places planes can't reach.
Helicopters, for all intents and purposes, are ground units. Treating them with the same combat model that you use for fighters and bombers would be idiotic.
Ozymandous said:EDIT: Oh, and I hope the combat of air units vs. ground units is a bit different because I always hated seeing some jet fighter shot down by a musketman or something because they "fought" hand-to-hand like a cavalry vs. musketmen or soemthing. That was about as bad as the spearman defeating a battleship scenario.
