One of the features of GOTM21 is the first release of a new expanded Civilopedia that begins to attempt to put key strategy information right at your fingertips. This effort is being headed up by Zagnut with help from CruddyLeper and other volunteers including all the great CivFanatics that contribute actively to the War Academy and Strategy articles.

You may freely discuss these features here without turning the discussion into a Gotm21 spoiler thread.

For Civ3v1.29 players, this civilopedia will automatically be avalibale to you in all other games and should have no negative impacts on gameplay.

For PTW players, you will need to do a quick copy function to make make the Enhanced Civilopedia avaibale to you in all other games.

Take a few moments to look at the enhanced civilipedia, particularly in the Game Concepts sections and let us know if you find anything particularly interesting, helpful, or enlightening.

While browsing "A Guide To The New Material" I found the following gave an "Invalid Entry" error:

1) Pre-building Key Production
2) World Sizes and Civs

I'm playing PTW 1.21f (UK) and the GotM21 upgrade install (rather than full install).

regards

Ted

p.s. Expanding the 'pedia seems to be a very good idea

I'm impressed. A lot of work went into that, and I might never have noticed if you hadn't pointed to it. The guide to the new material in Game Concepts is a great starting point to find these gems.

I know roughly where most of the extra information is around the forums, but having it all neatly indexed in the 'poedia makes it a lot easier to check a point. I think I'd have been more inclined to try to improve AI attitudes if I'd been able to dip into Bamspeedy's article quickly during GOTM20, for example.

Still don't know whether I'd have dicovered my erroneous assumption about the UN voting rules though :(

There is one mistake. It's a mistake that probably is still wrong in the CFC Info Center, so not really the fault of the person who gathered the info for the Civlopedia.

The free starting units for the AI on higher difficulty levels is wrong. It's really more like double than what is listed there, plus it doesn't mention the free workers and settlers (you can get the full info from the editor). And the units aren't random, it's based on whatever defense and offensive units they have techs for (Spearman if they start with Bronze working, archers if they start with Warrior Code, warriors otherwise).

Thanks for pointing out the problems you discovered.

You are right about the info on the difficulty levels, Bamspeedy. I will correct it for next month's game.

TedJackson - I check the problem you are having and can't duplicate it on my US version of PTW 1.21. My version displays those entries correctly. However, I am familiar with that error message and I will PM you with a possible fix. I suspect that a couple of characters may have gotten dropped during the installation process.

It's sweet! Has some strategy info. that I haven't seen before.

Saw one thing that needs correction, but can't remember.

Edit: Finally remembered. It's a small thing, but I'm a perfectionist. In one of the strategy articles it says the AI severely undervalues workers. That has been (over)corrected in PTW.

I have seen the problem as well for the second item that TedJackson pointed out. I'm using the ptw 1.21 for US. I am using the add-on install if that matters at all.

There's a lot of extra spaces in the middle of some words in the new entries. I had a list of them but dont have it with me now, i'll post it up tomorrow when i finish looking through it.

One thing that could be added to the "Accessing Civfanatics while Playing" section(or whatever it's called) is that if Civ is running the same as your desktop resolution, hitting the start button or ctrl-esc will bring up the taskbar and start menu, allowing you to launch things or go to the desktop(via the "view desktop" button)

An idea for future entry: One on the civilisation3.ini file. Included would be how to change the civ3 resolution, and other things that can only be changed via the ini file.

The only changes I've seen are the descriptions of the new resources, wool, lambs, menudo, etc. I will check out the rest as soon as I get home. Sounds very nice.

Before I bother cracker with a PM, does anyone know if he has addresses a few gramatical and technical issues w/ the new civilopedia? In particular, a couple of unit links are blank and I found other gramatical errors that do not really bother me, but might peeve the author.

I have updated the Pedia for the next GOTM. However, I would appreciate it if you would give me the links that show up blank as a couple of other players have reported this and I am unable to duplicate the problem. It is not too late to still make changes for next month.

Please tell me what version of civ you are playing and the patch, the type of operating system (MAC, Windows) on your computer and the version, and whether you are playing Open, Conquest or Predator.

If you would like you can post that info here.

[ptw]1.21f open

Blank entries for units:
Defense (sic)
Muslim Caravel
Settler1
Settler2
Treasure
Worker1
Worker2
(all problems with previous GOTMs too)

Tribe Entry Problems
Don't know how to address this without it being a spoiler
Two new civs still refer to their original text entries.
Plus by replacing the old civs with the new, you can use the civilopedia to see who is in the game (although F10 does that too, I guess)
One has no text at all

'Pearls' bonus resource is described as implemented, but not as it was supposed to be implemented
'ROCK' bonus is undefined; ditto 'Stone'

Worker actions:
Would be nice if Airfield specified more clearly the change from PTW basic (I know it says 288 turns, but it doesnt say it is changed)
It could note that outpost is disabled?

By the way, it's a good idea - I don't want this to come over as nitpicking criticism, zagnut asked for the list of problems. I'd rather have a work-in-progress than nothing at all.

After installing all those GOTM updates, in my civlopedia I find that many of the unit's pictures are blank or have a question mark with a black background. Is my game going to crash when one of these units makes an appearance on the field?

No. It's just that the wealth of free new information added to your Civilopedia is not complete.

It is not only that, AlanH. Some of those civs with a question mark are intentionally left blank so that you do not know their attributes.
