Our peace treaty with India has expired. We can renegotiate the peace and obtain from India Literature and all of their gold (6 pieces). This will delay further military action against India for 20 turns; but it will also allow us to concentrate on the Dutch without having to worry (too much!) about fighting the Indians.

We ask: Should we renegotiate peace with India for literature and their gold?

If we do this, then our trade route to the outside world is secure (it probably goes through the Indian harbor at Bangalore). We could probabaly secure another luxury via trade with Portugal and/or the Mayans.
I voted yes.

Yes, try to squeese as much gold out of them as possible ;).

Nice way to get lit. I hadn't thought of it to be honest, just assuming we would eliminate the Indians after the Dutch.

Having said that we can get lit anyway and we need the land more than the tech. I voted no, but brilliant idea.

Checking the options for a Peace Renegotiation is the only no-reversible game action allowed by anyone other than the DP and the game must then be immediately closed without performing further actions.

So I would guessed Bertie renegotiated it to find out.

You can do that by checking the diplomacy window by getting to have a look at what they could offer. All he has done is go to active deals and put peace on the table and see what they offer for it, if anything at all.

i think that is stupid, (not the peace thing) but why do we allow that.

Nobody,

I agree. I understand why it is allowed here but it is still a cheat IMO (although in this case we could be sure that India would pay for peace).

I voted no, because I think we should wipe out India in less than 20 turns from now.

That's exactly what I did. Even though this is allowed by the Constitution, is this just not done in the demogame? If so I apologize; I just assumed since it was specifically mentioned as allowable that it was a tool normally used.

BTW, I'm torn by the argument of wehther we should take India out ASAP or go for the treaty. In fact originally I assumed we'd war with them after we fought our first war with the Dutch. But that war is taking longer, and if we decide to simply drop the originally plan of a limitedDutch war and take most of their territory, that's going to take at least another 10 turns. Then we'll acquire the Republic, revolt, and hopefully have a few turns to get things settled down and troops healed. By that time the peace treaty will have expired and we can deal with India in two or three turns of war - not enough time to cause significant war unhappiness.

Bertie,

Please don't worry about the renegotiation. It is explicitly stated in the constitution and thus probably very "done" in the demogame. Reading back I see my previous post can be misunderstood as rather harsh criticism of what you did, and it was not meant that way. My apologies . I simply meant to say that it is usually "not done" outside the demogame, where it would be considered reloading ("cheating"), and that I personally prefer to play that way. You played by the rules as they are stated here, and that's fine.

Concerning the India treaty: the best reason for not doing it was stated by Furiey in the discussion thread: we can get Literature by other means, so why tie ourselves up with a 20 turn peace deal? In other circumstances I would definitely do the renegotiation.

In fact whether we renegotiate or not we can paly well over the next 20 turns or so. If we renegotiate, then we revolt and build infrastructure for a while and then take out the Indians. If we don't then we can just take out the Indians as soon as we like. Very little in it really. I still lean towards taking out the Indians early so that we don't face a few elephants. Nice unit and all that, but more expensive to deal with than spears.
