I'm continuously getting this error on my external hard disk. This is the second time it's happened, I don't know why and it just wipes out all the data I have on it. After the first time it happened I formatted it and thought it was fixed and I started putting my downloaded movies back on it again, then it gave me the error again and wiped out everything I had saved. This is getting rather frustrating. And it won't let me safely eject it, says its still running.

Any ideas?

Have you ran scandisk check on it?

Yes I did it just now and it didn't come up with an error. So I don't know. I guess I'll have to reformat it again.

I've seen a similar problem. The solution was to throw away the USB adapter, faulty hardware.

It can be something else, though.

I've had it for months now and never had a problem, I did buy it in India though the brand is Maxtor 120 GB.

If the problem is sudden and recent, it might suggest the hard drive is starting to fail, but if Scandisk says nothing is wrong then probably not. Try saving large chunks of data to a thumb drive and see if you get the same issue. If not then it might be the external cage is screwed up somehow---e.g. drivers, bad circuit board,..?
