Fallout 3 sucks!!

Disappointing? Yes, Fallout 1 & 2 are amongst the best cRPG's ever made...

People always say this. They really are not. People always tell me how great the story is in the 1st game. I think they must have played it when they were young and are completed blinded by nostalgia. Every character is extremely one dimensional, dialogue is lacking, and the world barely react to your actions. Ex. pick up Tycho (I think) to clean up the town, but then you can right away just kill the good guys and he doesn't mind one bit.

The combat is BRUTAL. The only real strategy it allows for is taking advantage of the turn based system in a gamey manner. It is completely trounced by the real time party combat of the infinity engine games (BG2 and PST)

The only things old fallout games did great was the unique setting and overall charm. Everything else (gameplay, story, graphics, interface,...) is done better in BG2 and PS:T.

Were they great for their time? Yes. Today? Not really. Unlike BG2 and PS:T which are still unrivaled (except for graphics).

Gotta agree with XenoBiotic. I think these games (Arcanum, one of my fav's included) were so great for their times. They were on to something back then that made the mind wonder where video games would be today. And sadly, when a game uses stuff like alternate routes through games nowadays people act like its something new. Games have yet to really evolve off of this system in 10 years and still act like a player being given a choice is some new feature to games. This sadly was the big hype to DAO and FO3. I have yet to try out DAO yet but would like to.

Side note: It isn't on PS3 but I would recommend you try out Mass Effect on either 360 or PC. PC would probably be better. IMO it's everything FO3 wished it was.

I'm awesome, enough said.

This thread had me dust off FO3 and give it another whirl. I didn't take much to it when it first came out but I think it wasdue to expecting a real FO3. Knowing what I was walking into this time allowed for a different outlook on it. I still don't think it is great by any means but it is good enough to have me momentarily captured.

It is true that roaming the wastes is where this games shines and dulls back up when you come into a populated area. However, I gotta hand it to this game that I much prefer it over Oblivion. I am not real big on Bethesda's flavor to their games. If I am not mistaken they did NWN and I think I enjoy that one (part 1 - havent played 2) the most possibly. (Note that I skipped play 2 even though 1 is my fav) Bethesda's main problem is they are too cliche which is TERRIBLE for interactive storytelling. Everything is goody-two-shoes or scum of the earth and the only way to walk a middle ground if alignments are introduced at all is to be a skitzo. Help a bum find food, then go slaughter someone to counteract it. This also shows up in EVERY conversation. One answer is extremely fanatically good the other aborrantly evil of sorts. You may have a "I'll come back later and tell you one of those" option as well.

I think the main problem Bethesda holds in roam though is their catering to the idea that really there is no drawback to running around murdering anything that moves. Imagine if the brotherhood came and would hunt you down for slaughtering Megaton. I was able to kill everyone in Megaton at level 5-6 and there were no reprecussions. Alot of rewards though. I started over because that kind of leg up on a game got boring fast. I did the same thing with Oblivion when I got it. Any game that allows me to slaughter a town, I will to see if I can, no game has stoppedme yet at very low levels. Then I play on further to see the reprecussions. No game has ever given me reprecussions for it either. Although all of them have rewarded me with insane loot and money at a very low level.

I don't know what max level is on the game, I am currently lvl 12. I already have a fat boy in top notch condition, about 30 mini nukes, a minigun in great condition with over 1500 ammo and its still coming in fast, almost 2 rocket launchers at full condition and about 40 rockets to go with em. I usually run 1-2 big guns on me with a chinese assault rifle, combat shotgun, and hunting rifle. Then a Shishkabob for melee. I always have 50+ stims on me as alot of times I have to sell my loot for stim packs because people run out of caps.

At level 12 I am waiting to take on one of those big super mutants that attacks the GNR building to see what I can do. My main question to you seasoned players out there is, is this all the weaponry I have to look forward to or is there actually better weapons in this game? I would love to know I am still bottom feeding but I sincerely doubt it.

Thanks for any input on this

Played and liked Fallout3 but prefer BG2. Especially with mod that allows you to play BG1 and BG2 and ToB as one game and uses the BG2 engine!!!!! Thats some epic shizzal!

I'm still awesome though

Fallout 3 and Baldur's Gate are two entirely different games, its like comparing apples to oranges.

Oranges and apples share many similarities.....

Anyway the OP disliked Fallout 3 so pointing out a different game could lead to the OP playing and enjoying BG.

Admitidally playing DA:O and Fallout 3 on a consol is very different to playing a modded version of a PC game.

Still their both round and grow on trees. Or something.

Both are fruits too and have an outer layer of skin called a peel. Both are commonly ate as wedges and both are leaders in the fruit juice industry. :mischief:

Similar to why I recommended Mass Effect. It seemed the OP wanted to play another RPG that was top shelf:

I figured I would like another "top-shelf" RPG game, so I tried Fallout 3, which is fairly well known. I was very disappointed. The graphics sucked, the story just wasn`t enthralling like in Dragon Age, the combat REALLY sucked! That`s my biggest beef with the game, the combat part was poorly done. It tried to incorporate a shoot-em up style combat with RPG style combat, but just did both things half-assed and that really sucked. In an RPG I want RPG style combat, I don`t want to worry about aiming and shooting.

Now, based off that last statement, maybe you shouldn't try out Mass Effect. However, I think it was a successful attempt at merging RPG with FPS combat. (Not neccesarily a bad idea, and IMO a great aim to take modern/non-fantasy RPG's) RPG's can't get my adrenaline going and Mass effect does that well. Plus, not only am I getting a little tired of fantasy genre, but I am sick to death of "let's take turns hitting each other" combat.

it was difficult (I played Very Easy and I still couldn`t do it)
This makes me wonder if Homie was aware of and utilized the VATS system. As the game would be more difficult if you never enter VATS.

Now I can hardly tell if Fallout 3 is a good game, but I'm still on withdrawal from playing it. I recall an old roommate playing it when it first came out and I didn't think much of it, but several months ago I got my hands on a console version and then for PC. Within the course of a week I must have played the game through half a dozen times, I was entirely immersed and utterly disconnected from all reality. I literally had to start taking prolonged breaks outside to make sure that I remembered which world I lived in. I had to play the game through in every way possible and I was helplessly addicted; it just had everything I wanted. Needless to say I'll be waiting for New Vegas, but I'll need a new computer.
