Fallout 3

For those that want to revisit either Arcanum or Fallout 1/2, I'd recommend doing so with unofficial patches installed.

Drog has made Unofficial patch, an extra pack and higher resolution patch for Arcanum :

Unofficial Arcanum Patch
Extra Pack for the UAP
Arcanum 1024x768 Edition

Killap has made Unofficial Patch and Restoration project for Fallout 2 :

TeamX has made an unofficial patch for Fallout 1 :

You can find links to similiar projects for other infinity engine like games (and others) from my site (link bellow). Go to 'Links' then 'Infinity Engine'.

And there're many mods for Arcanum, from additional guns, allows up to level 127, restoring broken schematics to party member level up changes.

You can find mods on Terra-Arcanum, a site dedicated to Troika games.

So the game is out next week. I've been sucked in by the hype as usual, but based on Bethesda's track record I think this is a fairly safe bet to be an excellent game.

The best thing about games like this (in my opinion) is the character creation stage. I'm sure I'm going to spend ages at the start of the game getting my stats and appearance just right, including spending a VERY long time pondering which beard to wear.

Argh, dammit! They brought in the compass from Oblivion, the single thing I hated most about Oblivion!

What do you mean, the little display that shows you where your objective is? If so I don't know why you'd hate it so much, I found it really useful, unless you mean that it's kinda unrealistic to know instantly where your objective is? For gameplay purposes I think it's a good feature. Am I missing the point?

Many (including me) voiced their doubt of Bethesda to deliver a new game true to the Fallout tradition... and it looks like Bethesda failed exactly that way.

Review from Sweden (partially translated and linked to)

It's Fallout fans' worst nightmare: Oblivion with guns.

I think that may simultaneously be Oblivion fans' collective wet dream. Personally, Oblivion has consumed many many hours of my life, with a couple of games each lasting over 50 hours as well as many shorter ones. All I want from Fallout 3 is for it to be as addictive and darkly humourous as Oblivion.

The objective thing was alright, I guess, but the real clincher was that it effectively made exploring redundant. You could just see on your compass where the caves were, or where the cool stuff was, without actually having to see them.

For me it took a lot of the fun out of running around looking for caves.

Hey, the reviews sofar looks great. Lots of 9-10's.

As much as I liked Oblivion, I don't know if I would get back into it if I could ever get it working without reformatting my hard drive (it won't even uninstall). It's just so poorly optimized and it's missing something. As well I have too many mods for it (over 3 gigs...). You really shouldn't need that many mods for a finished game.

And I can't help but think of Oblivion when looking at Fallout 3 pics.

From gamers reviews I read I am afraid I have to conclude that the spirit of the original Fallout games is not there. It is Oblivion with guns "colored" by special Fallouty themes like Vaults and Chems. Too bad, I was looking forward to this one.
Anyone from the older generation got the actual game? Any insights?

I'm still trying to figure out if it's worth my time. Especialy since i don't like Oblivion much. If it's just oblivion with guns then why play it ? I think i'll wait for reviews from someone closer to my situation.

I'm downloading it on steam right now. It was really an impulse buy, but after seeing the game play videos and V.A.T.S. I knew that I must have it. Not really sure if my rig is up to snuff and after reading some forums it turns out alot of people are having trouble with it, even on very modern machines. Anyways, I'll report back later and give you guys the scoop.

Because some people who want to play RPGs are sick and tired of the same fantasy over and over again

Yeah, their technical support forum is getting new posts every minute. People seem to have tons of problems, mainly with the game crashing and hanging at random. Nice going Bethesda

This we can live with. It is the plot and the interface we can't change!

I installed it at 5:30pm. When I next saw the clock, it was already 10pm.
