I'm curious at how loud peoples video card fans get with playing ciV my graphics card -ATI Radeon 1GB HD 4870- can play the game on full specs but I turned them down as it slows down later game. Now i'm finding even at mid game with medium settings my fan is unbearably loud, so I end up switching to strategic view which is annoying. Just wondering if anyone else finds this or is it my setup?

Heh, thought something entirely else when I heard "fan noises". But yeah, I too have this problem and frequently use strategic view late game :(

Unexpected.

I don't have this issue of fan noise since I don't run all the graphics maxed out. I run most things at high or meduim except minimum-leaderheads due to bad performance and minimum-Fog of War due to preference.

You should be happy that the fan DOES spin up :D

Lots of folks in the 2K forums complaining that Civ5 fried their video card :mischief:

No complaint from me, but I spend a liitle extra to get a card with a better than average cooling system.
As long as you keep the temperature of the chip in the 80-90°C range, you could reduce the fan speed manually.

Didnt 2kgregs video card overheat during the live webcam game demo before release ?

Its a DX11 game with all sorts of options that can push your card so its not suprising that the fan is spinning up loud. All I can suggest is for you next purchase choose a card specifically designed for quieter operation.

Eh? What's this thread about? I couldn't hear the opening post...

Which makes one wonder if the performance across multiple PC builds would have been better if the game was done to look optimal with DX9/10 instead.

Yea yea, the technology bus must keep rolling. One day there will be more than a handful of DX11 games out there.

Got the same problem but I have a simple solution: I stopped playing the game :D

Mine was the same until I got the compressed air spray out. I used to force-cool the underside of the laptop with a 12" desk fan before. Now all those dust bunnies are back in the warren and I can hear.

Mine creates a mini tornado. You need to push it to the limit. Manually set it to the max speed until V-TECH KICKS IN.

Similar to gruven, the OP's complaint is pretty much the reason I now go for fanless cards. I made this decision a few years ago when I got sick of the whining noise of the tiny graphics card fans.

That's the card I'm using these days. Runs the game just fine, though it does require putting some thought into how air flows through the case.

If noise annoys you, the site silentpcreview is recommended reading.

For some reason, when I play Civ V, the fans go nuts, but it can play high settings perfectly.

Then mid-way through the game, some City Screen icons or notification icons will go "graphic glitch" on you and fuzz up everything. xD

No problems with fans. Although I notice that without casing fans, the internal of the PC can shoot up from normal 50 to 90 when playing Civ V. Now I bought a fan for the casing and my temp goes from norlam 45 to 65-70 when playing civ V

4870x2 here, and it gets loud - very loud. The 4870x2 is known for a very loud fan, so I half-expected this. Though it is a bit strange, because this only happens with Civilization 5.

My GTS 280 heats up to 80°C almost immediately and then stays there. All graphical options set to max with AA 4x. DX10/11 setting, of course. The processor is an i7 920, not overclocked.

Fan noise is not a problem. The fan (I'm not having music or TV sets running in the background) is only to be heared if you really concentrate on listening for it.

That's in a big tower with 1* 120 mm in the rear and 1*80 mm in the front and an opening in the tower's ceiling.

I don't have any issues with my fans being loud. I'm playing on DX9, however for those 25 or so turns that I can play on DX10/11 before it crashes I don't have any fan issues either.

Right before Civ V was released I did some major cleaning with some compressed air inside my case (I had dust in there that was a couple of years old and from a variety of locations!) and my computers been super quiet ever since.
