Fantasy Books

HAs any one here read any of the good selling fantasy books? Here's a list that I've read:

The Belgariad/Malloreon books 1-10 + Belgarath and Polgara

The Elenium book 1

The Sword of Truth books 1-8

The Fionavar Tapestry books 1-3

and

Into the Darkness

If you've read any of these books would you care to disscuse them? Or would you mind adding any good FANTASY books to the list?

I have read (and liked) the Belgariad/Mallorean/Elenium/Tamuli series. They are more on the humor side than actually being serious fantasy stuff. Always know that eventually the good side will win. Not familiar with the rest.

I feel the Wheel of Time series is pretty good too (by Robert Jordan) but reading this whole series through really requires some heavy thinking. I like the Riftwar and Serpentwar books too (by Raymond E. Feist).

Wheel of Time is an extremely good series, and should be read by all

David Gemmel's Drenai and Sipstrassi sagas are good, and Terry Brooks' Shannara series is quite alright.

Piers Anthony- anything by him, as well as Harry Turtledove. And the Dragonlance collection is generally very well done, even though I do not like the way they have taken the series.

Ain't read that one, but have looked at his alternate WW2 stuff: "Lizards!" and "The Two Georges"

Here is a couple I liked..

Stephen R. Donaldson
*The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever series
*The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant series

Margaret Weis
*Death Gate series (with Tracy Hickman)

Gene Wolfe
*The Book of the New Sun series

Have any of you read the Book Of Swords series... I forget the author... It's about a group of swords made by one of the gods... They each have a certain power... One has the abilaty to cure any phisical ailment. Another can lead you anywhere you want to go. One when possesed gives you real good luck. Ring a bell? Good books. Well written.

Well I really don't want to start writing down the 150+ book I have in my room or the 100 that are downstairs in my living room - or the 250+ that are still at my parents place!!!

But why have you only read book one of the Elenium?? I really think that the Elenium and the Tamuli series are better than the Belgariad and Mallorean!!

And yes the Sword of truth series is good, but I think that the later books aren't no where near as good as the first.

But so is:

The Darkelf books by Salvatore
The Riftwar books and the other Midkemia books by Feist.
Wheel of time by Jordan
Deathgate and others by Weis
Most of Greenwoods books
Even Rice writes a few good books.

And then of cause Pratchett - LOL that man can make me laugh!!

As you might think I do collect fantasy books - and I usually buy one or two every week - I just love reading those book - even more than I love playing Civ2!!!

Ranking of fantasy books:
1. Belgariad/Malloreon by David Eddings
2. Discworld by Terry Pratchett
3. Shannara by Terry Brooks
4. Riftwar by Raymond E. Feist
5. Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan.

I know some thinks Wheel of Time is the best, but I think it's WAY too long-winded.

Lord of The Rings is the standard by which all others are judged.
It goes without saying that it is number 1.

After that, Belgariad by David Eddings.
I liked Silk. He was very funny, as was Old Wolf.
If any of you ever play Legend Of the Red Dragon on a BBS, you'll recognize Barak as the bartender at the inn in the game.

Barak as a bartender? Are you serious? He would probably break half of the glasses and drink from the rest of them

.

Oh yeah, forgot Lord of the Rings, of course. In shared first place on my list.

I can't believe you people would so casually snub the Icewind Dale trilogy, the Dark Elf trilogy, and the rest of R.A. Salvatore's work. If you haven't, read them.

The Book of Swords, by Fred Saberhagen, is the one mentioned by Brad. Woundhealer, Sightblinder, Soulcutter, Coinspinner, et al. 12 swords created by the self-styled Vulcan in a epochs-removed post-apocalyptic Earth where demons and magic exist, and supremely powerful former men and women of mankind's shadowed past pretend to godhood. A really good read(several actually, as there are three books, and several spinoffs).

But one of the best fantasy books ever written was Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light. If you haven't read this one then shame on you.

EDIT: minor changes

Of course Tolkein is the standard. No others compare with his works.

My favorite fantasy author next to Tolkein is Stephen Lawhead.

The first three books of his pendragon cycle are the best. (Based on the Arthur legend)

His song of Albion trilogy is excellent as well.

I enjoyed Brooks, and Eddings as well, but find they start to repeat themselves after a few books.
