for my very first post ballfanz,
id like to ask

is there any way in hell to speed the game up between turns?

its ridiculous when you get to the industrial age.

ive always loved civ to death, but this keeps me from playing it as much as id like to.

i've tried turning enemy & friendly moves off.... it doesnt matter.
the computer still moves each enemy/friendly unit individually....
cant they all be done at once??

is there ANYTHING that can be done??

please help!!

thanks!

turn off "show friend move." (note, different from "animate." You can also turn off "show enemy moves" but that is dangerous if you are at war. You can also turn off animations on combat, "animate our own", "show our own" moves etc.

thanks, but i've tried that already too.....

i wish someone could make some sort of patch or utility or something....

Turn off auto save in the preference menu... it should speed up the turns abit more. Other then that and turning every other show or animate off, you would have to decrease the number of AI's your playing. I have a few games im still playing that can take 30 to 40 minutes on a p4 1.6ghz

Upgrade your machine, I went from a P3/800/256MB, to a P4/1.7/512MB and it breezes through all the way until the end of the game.

It was hardly an expensive upgrade, about $250 total for the board/cpu/ram.

If that is the only way to significantly speed up the game then Firaxis is way off base by recommending (for best performance) at least p2/500/64. Minimum is even crazier - p2/300/32.

I have a p3/600/384 and get so bogged down by the 1700's I start over with a new game. I have too little time and a low level of frustration.

It drives me crzy when I have to sit and wait while the AI builds and moves those 80+ unit stacks of death (theres I hope).

30 minutes on a P4? Something is very wrong with your PC. How much RAM do you have?

I am playing on a P4 1.7/512Ram, with a huge map, 8 civs left, all animates turned off and a turn takes like a minute. Maybe another minute longer if the Russian move all their ironclads around.

Even on my P3-550, a turn was like 5 minutes on a huge map.

I don't believe it, I dno't have any speed issues, can someone explain to me why my celeron 366mhz is just as fast and in some cases faster than on my friends 900mhz celeron?? Am I just lucky, or did I do something right when I configured my PC? I never have to wait for more than a few seconds between turns and that's thru all ages!! I have all animations, sound, and autosave on......

We've complained since November about the slowness of this game, even with fast CPU's. I've just about given up even trying to play in the Modern Era. Without scenarios to get us right into Modern war with a manageable number of units, it eliminates that era entirely.

We also have the infamous Hanging Unit - the unit that just hangs there repeating a command over and over, thus slowing down the game even more. It is very frustrating.

The Minimum Requirements on the Civ 3 game box were simply a lie, alhough, as stated, it's rather slow even with relatively fast CPU's.

Firaxis? With patch 1.21 they slowed the game down even more with the compressiing of files! :crazyeye: Playing with Autosave off is even crazier as the game is also known to crash.

It's no wonder people started asking about when Civ 4 will come out last December. :(

Exactly!

And to the above poster, left unchecked, windows can take a nice speedy machine and make it run like a snail, always keep your machine in good running order, typically I leave windows on its own disk (partition will do ok too) and programs on another, data on another, always keeping each drive on a scheduled defrag.

Stone: Custom huge map 256x256 with 13 of 16 civ's left by the modern age in both maps. And to top it off in both maps i don't have the largest army at over 500 military units. Most the civ's have an average military compared to me.

Same amount of ram at 512megs.

I find that if you pat your computer nicely, and offer it a treat, it'll go through the turns much faster.

 I think I did prefer to :whipped: mine to get it work faster. ;)

Ack, shame, shame! Get thee to the Genocida thread now!

Computers are people too.

@sabo10 What size maps/difficulty lvl/number of AI civ's do you normally have ? i tend to play monarch custom huge maps with max civ's. Those little details will play a huge role on how fast your turns load.
