Panzer's come with chivalry now? Damn, the Germans were so far ahead of everyone else technologically, it's astounding.

Yeah, you never heard of the famous middle-ages Panzerpferdmann?
Oh, I've heard of them, I just didn't think Sid had put them in the game, that's all.

Oop, my bad, didn't red topic name properly :)

I think the AI does rate vets higher than regulars, but I don't think it usually worth it to have vets instead of regulars if you only want your military as a deterrant.

You might also be glad of having vets around if the deterrent fails and it does come to a fight (which might also make the barracks good for healing).

I always liked the cheap Knight UUs. 70 shields is such a pain in the early middle ages even w/ golden age.

Watching your 7 turn, 70 shield Knight lose to a 20 shield regular Spear is quite painful. I'm not sure 60 shields is much less painful, so I don't think a Keshik or an Ansar is much more of a bargain. They are also weak on defense.

I used to skip chivalry, preferring to beeline MT for cavs. As I've moved up in levels, I find myself doing that less and less, though. Anyway, of the knight replacements, I'm going to go with the Rider. No doubt the War Elephant is fun, particularly when you pile them into Armies, but I really, really enjoy having (almost) an entire age with the only 3-move attacker on the field.

Defense is pointless in an attacking unit imo. Also for the cost of five knights I could instead get (for example) one pikeman, four trebuchets, and five MDI. At 60 shields knights become a bit more desirable, especially if it gives you a juicy golden age.

If you can hit in one turn, sure, defense is pointless. I'm talking about sending stacks of them across culture rich enemy borders, watch your Keshik stack melt away on the IBT. Ansars can go deeper so they are the better cheaper Knight. But still, 10 shields less still makes an expensive unit. I usually build Maces in all but top producing cities. But that's not the point of this thread. If you are building Knight replacements, what's your favorite? Knight or maces is anothe topic.

As I tried to say, if I am building Knight replacements, I like Ansar/Keshiks because they are cheaper. I also don't like to have my Knight units being attacked.
