I'm actually rather looking forward to France this time around. I wasn't particularly of any of their leaders in CIV (De Gualle was pretty good though) or their UU/UB. But this time it seems like they've got a pretty decent set of abilities/units, plus I always feel a little bad for France in that most of the modern West tends to forget that they pretty much smacked the rest of the world around to greater or lesser degrees for quite some time.
I cannot claim to play one Civ a whole lot more than others. I sually gravitate towards Persia or Germany as a rule, though I cannot claim that Germany's Special Ability befits my typical playstyle...
This time around France actually greatly interests me. With expanded culture they should be able to get a solid start, and with two unique gunpowder units that form the basis of most armies past the Middle Ages, they should be in a strong position to dominate later on in the game. Something that certainly interests me.
I don't know, I didn't ave any best civs ic civ 4, I liked financial most, but, I played with every other leader too. Don0t know why, but I'm not a big Rome fan. I like Greece,Russia and in civ 5 Germans and French look better than in civ 4(I hted De Gaulle )
I really like Songhai, but I think I'd rather play with them so I can negotiate with Askia outside that burning city.
Maybe Iroquois. Their special ability seems interesting for ambush tactics... and I like the color scheme. And on the other hand Hiawatha seems like a boring leader so if I play them I won't have to talk to him.
My first Culture win in Civ IV was with France. . .I might try to do that again with Civ V; Or maybe Greece and go for a Diplomatic win through the Hellenic League; Or, play Japan and really "kick the tires" on the new combat system. . .
My favorite civ in Civilization 3 is the Celts, for both the historical significance and the gameplay. Also Egypt. Both are already in Civ 5 if I'm not mistaken?

What I can say for sure is that I'll start with france to investigate the SP system, and then Arabia because it seems the closest to financial that suits my game style the most. Plus I think that Camel Archer will be a nightmare to counter, hassling the back lines and getting away with it!
But the Aztec kill-for-culture thing sure is tickling!
i defintily agree with this and yes the need an exp with Stalin and other warmonger leaders, and bring back the Zulus, cmon i LOVE shaka and his huge military iditotic self!!
