From what I have gathered most people seem to hate vassalage a lot and rarely use it. Personally I am doing a warmongering game right now which I usually don't do and I switched to vassalage and it saved my otherwise destroyed economy. I stayed with theocracy, vassalage and hereditary rule until I got to nationhood and now I am running that, even though I am not sure if I am really finding any benefit to it besides the reduced civic upkeep.

When I get to police state should I switch to that from hereditary rule? Also my empire is very big so I will probably try state property when it comes.

I find that even though my maintainance costs are high and my tech level is around 50%, since I have some many cities and rush courthouses I am still outteching everyone else quite easily.

So what are people's favorite civics to use in different situations and does my setup sound ok for a pure war game on a huge map?

My favorite civics are: Representation, Nationhood (the most underrated civic, in my opinion), Slavery, Free Market or State Property (depending on what I am striving for and how large my empire is), and Theocracy.

Mine is State Property (no I am not a communist). I like to make money (NO I AM NOT A COMMUNIST) State Property helps with money (no I am not a communist). Therefore I like State Property (no I am not a communist). It cuts all the maintence in your cities near to none (NO I AM NOT A COMMUNIST!).
[EDIT] Full Set (at the end of the day, as in towards the end of the game):
Universal Sufferage
Nationhood/Free Speech
Emancipation
State Property
Free Religion

Pacifism.

Hey, I'm a GP nut ok :)

If we're talking the full set, then its Representation, Free Speech, Emancipation, Free Market & Pacifism.

Universal Sufferage, Vassalage, Slavery, Communism or Free Market, and Theocracy. I'll switch up Vassalage and Theocracy for Free Speach Organized Religion in peace times....and before I get corporations or they're not going so well, communism all the way!:king:

I tend to obsessively build my economy, culture, and great people... my final combination is democracy/free speech/emancipation/free market/pacifism.

Usually gets me to the modern units way before anyone else (along with one or two city flips sometimes) and i go on a conquering rampage around midway through the modern age :D

I've actually begun saving up some extra great people specifically to found corporations when the time comes, except for some merchants (gotta love massive unit upgrades) and prophets.

Police State
Nationhood
Emancipation
State Property
theocracy

and yet I'm still not great at warmongering

Slavery is the biggest leap forward for Civics. Man's ability to oppress his fellow man seems to be the hallmark of a successful civilization.... ;)

Seriously, though ... Slavery is overwhelmingly good, especially early in the game. Turning food into production can be ridiculously powerful under the right circumstances.

Representation (followed closely by universal suffrage)
Bureaucracy (followed closely by free speech)
Emancipation
State Property
Free religion

Lately, I've been having a lot of success at expanding my culture by not declaring a state religion (unless I decide I want to go for a diplomatic victory with the AP or need the extra happiness). It works out nicely to found as many religions as possible, especially just after I build a new city (say on the border of my empire). The new city usually gets the holy city and 5+ culture each turn.

My favourite are:

Early game: Representation or Monarchy (depending if I can build Pyramids)/Slavery/Organized Religion
Late game: Representation/Bureaucracy/Caste System/Mercantilism or State Property/Pacifism

Slavery, Organized Religion or Theocracy, Hereditary Rule or Universal Suffrage, State Property or Free Market, Free Speech

In the game, Representation and Free Religion. Nothing like lots of happiness and :science:. I also love Free Speech for :culture: and :gold:.

Slavery has basically pushed me up a difficulty level. Bureaucracy is the only civic that comes close to comparing to it, in my games (I tend not to have a big empire, so I'm not interested in State Property). Those two are the ones which are most helpful for me overall (obviously they're not useful right through the whole game, but they each play a crucial role in leading me to victory). Free Market and Free Religion are the only other civics which make me feel "yay!" when I can finally use them - they're not really as important, but I'm a tech-monger and their effects are more directly useful for that.

i don't realy think there is an favorite civic it actually depends on how you play i think. I've i go war mongering i would choose Police state, Vassalge, State Property, Theocracy.

My favourite civics:

-Representation
I switch to this after HR and generally keep it for the rest of the game. Later in the game I think Universal Suffrage is better but representation is the best for such a large part of the game.

-Nationhood
The low upkeep and extra happiness from barracks is good in itself but the ability to stomp and army from the ground is astounding. In lots of cities you don't even notice the loss of a citizen and the effect of 15 rifles in five rounds is great, especially with Tokugawa or Churchill.

-Slavery
Take a look at the forums why this is extremely good. Besides I don't think there is any real competition in the rest of the labour branch. I would never switch to emancipation if it wasn't for the AIs switching into it.

-Free market
I play with Solver's patch and then corporations can be godsent. If not for corporations I would say state property, very powerful. Besides, I'm ex- syndicalist, and while I accept that it won't work in reality I like to at least have functioning socialism in a game :)

-Free religion
I don't like mucking around with religions, this gives me no religious problems and benefits at the same time.

slavery,state property and organized religion

i stayed away from slavery for a long time....but now i can't imagine playing without it....as someone else said, mastering it's use allows you one step up in diffculty

nothing beats that +10% hammers

well unless you are having major health issues and need environmentalism

Hello
I am a semi amateur player. I am playing on tiny maps with 3 opponents on noble difficulty. I am playing peaceful until I get grenadiers and cannons, then I go for war.
Could you tell me which civics should I take early and later? (usually I have my own religion and 4 cities on these maps)
