What's your favorite song from this smokin' guitarist and incredible stoner?

Personally mine is his cover of "All Along the Watchtower" (written by Bob Dylan). That is an awesome song.

He was the best musician of the 20th century in my opinion.

faves: Fire, Hey Joe (yes, a cover), Spanish Castle Magic, Purple Haze

All Along the Watchtower is my fav. Voodoo Child is my 2nd fav

hey joe, purple haze and foxy lady

You forgot two of his best ever:

"Wind Cries Mary"

and

"Hey Joe"

And where's Cross-Town Traffic?
My vote: All Along The Watchtower.

All of 'em!..... but, seriously i'd have to choose Little Wing, about the only song that almost makes me cry, its so beautiful. Other faves would be:

Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
1983... A Merman I Should Turn to Be
Freedom
Redhouse

"All Along the Watchtower", just over "Hey Joe", but one has got to love the "I hate stoners" option. :D  ;)

Little Wing.
That song is really good.
I really like it, I have a cd with it (Preformance by Stevie Ray Vaughan).

I'd say "Hey Joe," "Machinegun," and then "All Along the Watchtower," in said order. Nice to see so many Jimi fans are also Civfanatics, though.

Hey Joe, Purple Haze (Love the Riff!), All along the Watchtower.

No way he is the best musician of the 20th century though... But he is one of the best guitarists ever.

He had great technique but he lacked the theoretical knowledge to make him a musician instead of just a guitarist.

Who is better? Nobody has been able to duplicate or exceed what he has done. Have you ever heard his live stuff? The man was a genius. Too bad he self-destructed, like so many other phenominal artists tend to do.

For me there are many better. I simply don't like his style. The man was a great player but he simply didn't have thoretical knowledge. Did you ever heard him improvising? It's a total disaster!
There are many guitar players that aren't as talented as he is playing but are far superior song writers. For example: Lennon & McCartney who are probably the best writters in modern musical history or Knopfler that also had a very good technique due to the fact he was playing with his fingers and he combined it with elemnts of classic music.

i both agree and disagree. great technique doesn´t make you to a great musician. just listen to toto, they have great technique but sound terrible. neither thoretical knowledge or song writing skills makes you to a great musician, toto for example again. i think it´s more about the ability to communicate with the music and express feelings with it.

I've always liked Stone Free. A much overlooked Hendrix classic.

I agree with all of your selections, sounds like I should have put more options on the poll. I almost kicked myself for not including "Voodoo Child" (Chile, whatever). That is the best song that he wrote in my opinion.

I disagree, I think his solos are pretty sweet. They're just a little more influenced by blues and jazz than a lot of other soloist. Besides, at least he doesn't have totally scripted solos like a lot of other bands. As much as I love Oasis, most of their solos are written out and played the same way every time.

Jimi Hendrix was definitely one of the most influential musicians ever, not just in a musical sense, but he also sort of defined pop culture in the early 70's. He was definitely, in my opinion, one of the best and most innovative musicians of the 20th century.

Some of the other greats of 20th century music, in no particular order:

-Louis Armstrong, who made jazz true American music, and was also one of the first popular black musicians.

-George Gershwin, because he blended classical and jazz and brought it to the country.

-The Beatles. They pretty much redefined rock and popular music and, again, made it accessible to the whole world.

I know there's more, I just can't think of any right now.

"If 6 Was 9"! That's been my "rebel anthem" since my teen years. I STILL like it though. "I'm the one that's got to die when it's time for me to die, so let me live my life... the way I want to."

Actually, "Little Wing" is a close second--the two songs back-to-back on Axis make that one of my favorite albums--not just my favorite Hendrix album, but one of my favorite ALBUMS period.

"Sweet Angel" is another good one, it's soooo beautiful it sends shivers through me....

Other mentions:

"One Rainy Wish"
"Up From the Skies"
"Manic Depression"
"Red House"
"Voodoo Child (slight return)"

I LOVE Hendrix. The man was a mystical genius....

Such a tough choice!

I go with Voodoo Chile (not Child please!) :p

But there are so many greats and quite a variety of styles.

I love ...

"If 6 was 9"
"Red House"
"Little Wing"
"Crosstown Traffic"
"Angel"
"Hey Joe"
"Purple Haze"
"Castles Made of Sand"

and some of my favorites artistes will very influenced by him - Stevie Ray Vaughn, Robin Trower, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page.
