Ultimately depressing? One got the impression from my viewings of a sense of triumph against the odds, freedom and liberation. The final scene of the Chief loping through the fields towards Canada is most uplifting, as is his triumph of picking up the water fountain and breaking the window, when combined with that inmate laughing in maniacal victory. :)

The Cube.

That is arare rough diamond too. I bought Cube on DVD for only 9 euro! => DON'T DO THAT! IT IS OF VERY BAD QUALITY!!!!

As I didn't got any reaction on 'Memento', let me throw up another coin: 'Mulholland drive' by David Lynch: like Memento good for hours of discussion with you friends!

And oh, I very, very much liked the first season of Twin peaks!

One Flew over the ****oo's Nest was better than the novel. The book explored the idea of big people / little people, and masculinity, but it lacked one thing: Jack Nicholson.

1. godfather
2. godfather ii
3. pulpfiction

btw, it's kinda wierd to be in a green forum now.:)

1) The Shining
2) SW- Episode 5
3) SW- Episode 6
4) SW- Episode 4
5) SW- Episode 2
6) SW- Episode 1

One feels moved to make a couple of additions to one lengthy list:
In the Heat of the Night - a terrific all round film, with Steiger and Poitier great
Run Wild, Run Free - a good example of a restrained classic of British film, with John Mills and Mark Lester excellent in their roles.

The Ralph Bakshi cartoon version of Lord of the Rings is also good for a laugh.

:mwaha:

Memento
A Clockwork Orange
Apocalypse Now
Full Metal Jacket
Silence of the Lambs
Schindlers' List
Godfather
A Beautiful Mind
Lawrence of Arabia
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Shining

anything by Kevin Smith

and some guilty pleasures,
Orgazmo (Not a porno despite the name)
Billy Madison
Freddy Got Fingered

How did I miss this topic the first time?

<----Climax from my favorite movie of all time.

Pretty much all of the Star Wars movies are my favorites. Beyond that, I like Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, Lord of the Rings... err...
Not a big movie fan though. Lots of stinker's on people's old lists, but who wants to argue about movies. Certainly not me :D

Not referring to anyone in particular? :p ;)

john woo movies from hong kong are my favourites. saw "city on fire" just a few days ago. it was five years ahead of it´s time!

Real Genius -- the most quotable movie ever, plus it describes my college days perfectly.

"Do you still run?"
"Only when chased."

"Chris here is one of the top ten minds in the country."
"Thank you. Someday I hope to be two of them."

"Why are you wearing that thing on your head?"
"Because if I wear it anywhere else, it chafes."

Bowfinger was good. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Memento (sorry i took so long, erikk) were also good. I studied BladeRunner for year 12, and i still love it, so that really says something after all the dissection we did. I didn't really like the LOTR movie that much, it was ok, but I loved the book too much. silence of the lambs was great, again not as good as the book IMO but they did a remarkable job there, anthony hopkins was great.
I liked the Holy Grail more than those other monty python ones that have been mentioned. The Matrix was excellent. Of recent ones I liked minority report.

But my favourites are (In this order):
He died with a felafel in his hand
American History X
Lock, Stock and Two smoking barrels
Fight Club
Snatch

anything with jean-claude van damme (ok, it's my one vice, so shoot me) or jackie chan. Oh yeah, or edward norton.

(BTW sniping_people, wasn't that Lawrence of Arabia guy the dodgy soldier guy who stole everyone elses credit?)

And also star wars fans, i decree that episode 1 be stricken from the record.

i judge movies based on how good the movie is, not the credibility of the people involved

These are the ones I have given a 10 at the IMDb and the first of them is the greatest.

12 Angry Men (1957)
39 Steps, The (1935)
Airplane! (1980)
Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
Brief Encounter (1946)
C'era una volta il West (1969)
Citizen Kane (1941)
Conversation, The (1974)
Dead of Night (1945)
Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
Gold Rush, The (1925)
Great Escape, The (1963)
High Noon (1952)
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
Magnolia (1999)
Matter of Life and Death, A (1946)
Touch of Evil (1958)
Usual Suspects, The (1995)

By the way I am still composing my full list, so there are probably a few missing

Bully
Requiem for a Dream
Boondock Saints
Office Space
Boogie Nights
The Big Lebowski
Election
Anything by Monty Python
Anything by Kevin Smith
Anything by Terry Gilliam
Anything by Tim Burton (perhaps excluding Planet of the Apes)

Then there are of course those movies that are so horrible that you just have to love them (Weekend at Bernie's II, Filmen G, anything by Troma, and many many more)

Algernon Pondlife: i've only seen the great escape, and the usual suspects of the ones you said (both were excellent). And i've heard of citizen kane (uncultured swine i am).

bobgote: you are probably too young for many of those to have crossed your path. I would reccomend them all, but fish and poisson applies: I don't know your tastes. I know that many younger people find it hard to watch in monochorme, but it can be very worth the effort for the films that stand the test of time.
