Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic -Arthur C. Clarke (Fusion)

This is often referred to as Clarke's Third Law.

Clarke's First Law is "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong."

The Second Law is "The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible."

Every time I hear that one it makes me think what it would have been like. American's must have been really worried, and everyone in the USSR must have felt a sense of pride.

My Great Uncle was going to school for Physics at this time, and in the years of the space race. He and a bunch of other students all got paid by the gov't to camp in the mountains of New Mexico and use astronomy equipment to track satillites and try to determine various things like operating height, speed, etc and use those things to determine the weight of it and use that to try and get an idea of their ballistic missile capabilities.... cool.

I'm quite partial to the Electricity quote, by Edison.

"We will make electricity so cheap, that only the rich will burn candles."

Shame it was a load of BS.

Some other favorites of mine are...

"Never trust a computer you can't throw out a window."
"You can get more of what you want with a kind of a gun, than you can with just a kind word."
"The great masses of the people... will more easily fall victims to a big lie than a small one."

Bump.

For the message contained (there are several, but here's my top 3):
3. "Those who would give up a little liberty in order to gain a little security deserve neither and lose both." (Liberalism)
2. "Corporation, noun: An ingenious device for obtaining individual profit without individual responsibility." (Corporation)
but this one just strikes a tone for me:
1. "I have gained this by philosophy: that I do without being commanded what others do only from fear of the law." (Philosophy)

For the sheer horror of what it meant to live by these words:
3. "A man does not have himself killed for a half pence a day or for a petty distinction. You must speak to his soul to electrify him." (Nationalism)
2. "It is entirely seemly for the young man to lie mangled by the spear. In his death, all things appear fair." (Bronze Working)
but this one wins because of who says it:
1. "The great masses of the people will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one." (Fascism)

For humor value:
3. "People can have the Model T in any color, so long as it is black." (Assembly Line)
2. "The future will be better tomorrow." (Future Tech)
but leave it to none other than Mr. Al Capone to say:
1. "You can get more of what you want with a kind word and a gun, than you can with just a kind word." (Gunpowder)

The Al Capone quote is also my personal favorite. Others I'd have in my top 3 would be the 'bonfire under her decks' and 'radiance of a thousand suns.'

"The great masses of the people will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one." (Fascism)

Very true. As I read the quote the first time, I thought "yes, there is much truth there" then I read the source of that quote and it really hit me like a brick to the face.

"The Earth is the cradle of the mind -- but one cannot eternally live in a cradle." -Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky

The LORD bless you and keep you, the LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracios to you, the LORD lift up his countonence upon you, and give you peace.

The Bible : excuse the spelling :P

Least favorite: Nature herself has imprinted on the minds of all, the Idia of God.
Cicero

The quote for guilds is my favorite:

People of the same trade rarely meet, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation turns to a conspiracy against the public.

Also like Banking
Banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies.

and of course artillery
Artillery adds dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl

For humor: 'The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.' (Bureaucracy)
For content: 'When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.' (Communism)

(Both reposts, but whatever.)

What's wrong with a little imprinting? It's the truest statement in all of Civ.

And I recently had to do a poetry recitation. I immediatly went to Ozymandias since I knew 3 of the lines already:

And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings, look on my works ye mighty, and despair"
Nothing beside remains.
