Favourite starting technology?

I agree with the thread starter with France. I like that exclusive hold on Masonry/Alphabet so I can research Mathematics & Currency first. I think this gives me an advantage playing as France since I am able to trade these techs back to the AI first, not because I love catapults & marketplaces that much.

If I can trade these for Bronze working & Iron Working, I can then research Construction & get another "trader" tech.

In a similar fashion, I haven't played England yet, but the same might hold true for a quick go to Map Making, though this hold is not as exclusive & not as rewarding, nor as easy.

I guess the Aztecs with Ceremonial Burial & Warrior code might be able to pull off a quick go towards Monarchy, but again, not as easily.

Rush Iron Working and Literacy (GL), then, turn the Science down to 0%, and let the civs do the research for ya

Alphabet, bronze working. Better defenders, faster towards republic and great library, cheap libraries if you want to research yourself. Very close to Iron too.
