This thread is meant as a discussion, maybe even resource, as to how the combat system in Civ World does and does not work.
As it is now, the combat in CW is very much shrouded in mystery and random number generation (RNG), which both contribute to making it incredibly frustrating under certain circumstances.
In game 129, Russia was invaded by the Japanese, with player numbers being 14 versus 50. At the start of the battle, both sides were at around 20k strength, but Russia got absolutely slaughtered because of a series of unfortunate circumstances:
1) Call to Arms fail - 1 minute before the first combat, Russia popped Call to Arms. It did absolutely nothing. Apparantly, there needs to be an ongoing combat (with numbers flashing and all) before it has any effect, but this is not reflected anywhere in the tooltip or wiki. Having a battle ready to go does nothing, it has to be in combat.
2) Stack attack - When the RNG picks a big stack to attack, it makes a huge impact. When the RNG picks a small stack to attack, it does nothing. In the first 10 combats or so, this mechanism favoured Japan very much, causing them to snowball as Russia couldn't replace the lost soldiers.
3) Amount of attacks from one side - In the start, the strength numbers were even, but after one or two attacks from big stacks, Japan got a lead of around 1000. Mind you, this was still only about 5% relative to the defensive strength, but it caused Japan to gain 3 times as many attacks. If this mechanism is kept, it should be changed to reflect relative strength, as a 1000 lead is big in medieval times, but its nothing in modern day.
4) Documentation of stances - There are 3 stances avaliable for all units. If one side decides to put everything on heroic, it does not seem like the opposing side has a choice, as the total strength difference will otherwise be too much, and cause the battle to be over in very few combats. I do not know if there is supposed to be some sort of combat triangle here, but trying to actively use the stances seems to only bite oneself in the behind, as if you sacrifice the total strength from heroic, you just lose the battle faster, while maybe cutting your losses a bit. If this is the idea of fortify, then remove normal or heroic, as they have no purpose being 2 different things.
Feel free to chip in with other observations, battles etc. If get sufficient information, it might be possible to compile a combat FAQ to replace the lousy wiki.
