I'm getting ready to move after living in one apartment for three years, and I have three years of finacial stuff that I just threw in a drawer to sort through. I'm planning on keeping credit card and bank statements, but do I need utility bills, pay stubs, and credit card receipts? In case I ever get audited or the like, what's worth keeping? I'll be shredding whatever I toss out, so I'm not worried about the security.

What might be worthwhile, though would take a lot of time is to scan the documents and have them all on your hard drive. You can more easily sort them and it is much less taxing on space.

You must at least keep the originals of everything shown in your books. For further information you can sent me a PM (country, profession) and I can elaborate.

let your cc company, work, utility agency, etc. store your bills. If you ever need a statement, they'll have it. I don't even keep cancelled checks anymore.
