fire challenge/problem/riddle

Wouldn't it be easier just to clear away the area than to start another fire?

My luck, I'd build the second fire, and then the wind would shift!

no wait! ever heard of firemen starting fires?
it would work, by taking hte oxigen and stoping hte main fire form getting more fuel, so controled fires might work

I know they do it to create areas where there's no fuel, but stoping oxygen is done in extreme cases by making a large explosion. You should probably start the other fire by making your cloths catch fire and bring them to the western side of the island.

Like G-Man said, maybe you start a fire on the opposite end of the island and let the two fires burn towards each other. Once they reach the middle then all the fuel will be consumed and both fires will stop.

You could start it at the very end of the island, with your feet in the water. The sharks wouldn't be able to get you and the fire would spread in the direction of the fuel (towards the other fire).

but if the winds are pushing the first fire west then surely the new fire would move in the same direction: West.

yeah but it says you are in a cliff, oterhwise you wouldnt care since there would be plenty of sand between you and the fire

The operative idea here is to protect yourself by depriving the fire of its fuel, and burning another area before you have to be in it would be one to do it. Of course, this depends on the foliage in question, but I would still prefer to clear away the underbrush by hand or with sticks or whatever. For one, starting another fire is going to be a heck of a risk, as without any water at all, it would be very tough to control. Secondly, it's not going to be very fun to stand on charcoals, which you eventually would have to do. Even a field of grass would smolder for more than a few hours. If you had good boots, it wouldn't be too much of a problem though.

....that if you are ever on a burning deserted island surrounded by cliffs and vegetated with nothing but dried brush, put your head between your knees and kiss your butt goodbye....

oh i tought that since the 50s saying "duck and cover" could protect me froma nuke, it could protect em from a small fire....

Exactly
WINNAR!

If I had a prize to give to you I would.
You got that a lot faster than I did. Took me a few weeks.

Now work on surviving after the fire is over ;)!

But how exactly do you start the fire? Are there sticks?

My question is, how do you STOP the fire that you started?

Well, the wind is blowing towards the west (and for the sake of this riddle I guess we're supposed to assume it blows to the west the entire time), and you started the fire on the west side, so it should burn out before the fire on the east comes by.

A fair assumption I guess, You would have to start the fire close enough to the west end that it would have burned away long before the east fire showed up, but far enough east that you get get a good distance from the east fire.

Then again even when the west fire has gone out, the ground will probably still be too hot to walk on.
