First Look: Lakshmibai

Actually I find Battuta gets mentioned quite a lot as being undeserving. There couldn't possibly be any unspoken motivations there though!

Also, just as important to see what people say, is to see what they don't say.

They're complaining about a female leader, while citing other female leaders as 'bad examples'. Male choices that are on the same level as Tubman (Mach, Battuta, Rizal, Confucius) aren't mentioned at all.

Those that do this don't communicate that they have a problem with outlandish leader picks, only with the female ones. This is sexism, and that is not FXS's problem.

Not every screenshot posted contains such nonsense, and those absolutely can be seen as genuine criticism.
Agreed, on Battuta. Machiavelli and Confucius are spared because despite a debate about their leader worthiness, they are instantly recognizable personas for their massive global impact. One literally with an eponymous psychological personality trait and the other with a eponymous religion that's been in the game since it's launch in Civ 4.

Ben Franklin got torched on Reddit and elsewhere as the other selection for America. Even if there was fatigue from Washington or Lincoln, there were a host of other selections people were clamoring for, albeit mostly presidential (JFK, Eisenhower, Adams, Jefferson, etc.).

Yeah, that's probably it. I don't mind that Battuta is mentioned because he absolutely should be, but Kong and Mach definitely should be mentioned in the same breath. (Especially Machiavelli!!!). Likewise, I don't mind that Ada Lovelace is slammed as a choice (she ought to be!), but I also find it insulting that she's put at the same degree of 'bad decision' as Tubman and Lakshmibai. (neither of which are bad choices!)

I find that interesting because my impression was that Franklin was generally well-received by most players. I personally really like both him and Tubman as the American leaders - they really nail the American spirit between the two of them. Not that Franklin would have been my choice either. I would have gone with Jefferson.
