Fishing thread

You use thread?

Okay, kidding. I like ocean fishing, but have to admit that it is probably more about getting out on a boat than it is about catching fish.

I don't like eating fish and don't believe in killing stuff you don't plan on eating.

Apart from catching the fish everything else is fun.

I hate fishing.

1 baby bluegill, 1 baby sunfish, and 2 thumbs are the only thing I ever caught.

I've heard that fish don't have any pain receptors in their mouth, but how can something like that possibly be true.

I love fishing although I'm not very good at it. It's a good excuse to stand outside in the elements and not do a damn thing. Just stare out at the water and scenery, breath, talk with whoever you're fishing with since I rarely go fishing alone, or just sit there in silence sharing a moment of relaxed focus.

I have gone ocean fishing about four or five times. Once for tunas, the others for squids

Apart of having beers and taking some appetizers, I did not found any fun.

I love fishing. I like catching fish, I like preparing fish, I like consuming fish. The only thing I don't like is that we're filling up our oceans with plastics. Which inevitably get into the food chains.

I should fish more often. Usually just get out a few times or so during a summer. My parents have a nice fishing boat in one of the fjords and they like to go fishing so I sometimes tag along with them. I have a soft spot for fishing on small lakes but it's a little more of a hassle to get to but if the weather is nice it's a great day. Oh and ice fishing on a lake on a sunny day is about as relaxed as this Snerk can be.

I've also picked up spearfishing but I've yet to harpoon anything. I'm more into looking for scallops and mussels if I'm out in the water.

I go fishing all the time with my kids. My dad first took me before I could walk and I've loved it ever since. I'm mostly a freshwater guy who chases bass and pike, though I've gone to Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico a few times before I had kids. Now I spend most of my time going for panfish.

I actually just self-published a book on fishing with kids. I've put quite a bit of thought into it over the years and have found many of my friends have no idea how to get started (and often buy the wrong stuff in the process). It's called "Fishing with Kids: A Parent's Guide" on Amazon if anyone wants to check it out.

Darn you for starting this thread in February, by the way.

When we moved to Canada my initial go-to activity was playing outside. There was just nothing to do inside.. There was a TV at our hosts place, but I was not very good at English yet, so I was not interested in watching YTV and green goop falling on people's heads or whatever

I have memories of walking to the river just wearing a pair of euro style short shorts just fishing for hours and hours... I was in grade 7 at the time.. I would spend time looking for worms in the ground, and then try to catch some fish. Occasionally I would succeed. I forget where I got the fishing rod, but it must have been our hosts', or possibly some other friends of the family.. My other options for spending my time was.. playing outside with some friends.. maybe soccer or throwing rocks at stuff.. or whatever. I'm an introvert so fishing is a very viable alternative as an activity, even back when I knew absolutely nothing about it.

I fish on and off, but not really lately.. I've gotten a fishing license several times, and have rarely used it. I basically get it when my family goes on a cottage or camping trip.. I know that one of my brothers in law is into fishing and will bring his fishing rod and maybe an extra.. and my dad used to fish too.. We got out on canoes a couple years ago and went fishing a couple times. No big catches, but good times

Now that I think about it, I have some memories from grade 8.. me and this friend went out to this mystical spot where giant carp are easy to catch.. We couldn't catch any and decided that we needed a net to properly catch them.. it was like a marsh type area, you had to get in the water.. strange memories really if you ask me, because I also remember my friend then telling me he was going to steal a net and try to catch the carp.. but the memories end there so I think I went home

There was also this other slightly less mystical carp spot near the big lake here.. by the dam.. me and another friend were fishing there (couple yeras later, in HS) and it seemed like a good spot, but we were catching nothing.. lots of fish around that we could see, but they were not biting.. then this guy comes and gives us this stuff.. he tells us it is a mixture that the carp will love. It was a yellowish mixture with a bready doughy like texture. Anyway, we caught a couple large carp almost right away.. but we couldn't get any more of the magic mixture... or figure out what was in it

My other fishing memories are just boring and not worth mentioning or.. "holy carp i agreed to waking up at 3am and driving for hours and hours and then sitting there in the cold" and related trauma

I love catch and release fishing. I used to do it a lot in Missouri but I haven't done it since moving here.

Growing up I used to go fishing all the time at camp - me circa 1975 with a couple of Rock Bass:

I don't fish much these days, but when my kids were growing up I used to take them out quite a bit to the same spots I used to fish:

I like going out in the boat and exchanging stories with my friends with a "few" beers on the side. (while pretending to fish, of course)
My friends always seemed to take it more seriously than I did.

I have practiced spearfishing since i was a kid until few years ago. I have caught countless fish of many species using a variety of techniques from shallow waters where the waves break to deep waters, starting from the beach or using a boat.
Some fish i ate myself, gave some to family and friends and even sold (illegally) some.

I stopped spearfishing because a number of concatenated reasons: First because i dont want to contribute to the already evident degradation of the coastal ecosystem anymore, second because said degradation makes spearfishing more risky since i must go deeper to find decent sized fish, and third because i im getting too old, lazy and conservative for risking my life in order to get something i can buy at any market.

My local fishing hole in college was adjacent to a dry cleaner that had been fined for dumping chemicals. Everyone in town fished there but all but the Chinese were catch-and-release fishers. I don't know if they didn't know the history or didn't care.
Either way: :vomit:

I don't know why I didn't say something and now I feel bad about it.
