:hmm: One day I'll get the bugs ironed-out before the GOTM is released!

There has been a problem with crashes to desktop caused by one of the civ in the latest GOTM game not having an assigned culture group. I have no idea why this causes a crash to desktop, but at least it can be fixed. You will know whether you have this error if you get a crash when you first meet a certain civ you get a crash, or you don't get a crash but the city graphics for this particular civ are 'strange' (towns being shown as a single wall, rather than a proper 'town'.

For PC users, they can fix it themselves very easily by using the attached utility. Note: This utility works on uncompressed autosaves (to reduce the file-size of the utility - its now only 7.5 kb!). Simply run it, press the 'select file' button, browse to the autosave directory and select the latest file. The utility will fix this error, and rename the file with a "_fixed.sav" extention to the file name. It will put the new file in the same directory as the one that the source file is in.

For Mac users, for now you are probably best to e-mail me a save to GOTM@civfanatics.net.

My apologies for any inconvenience. :(

Better late than never ...

Here is a GOTM32 file fixer for Mac users (runs in OS X only). It's a zipped disk image, so:

1. Download and unzip it.
2. Double click the disk image file to mount it on your desktop.
3. Launch the utility yuo find in the disk image.
4. Choose the last Autosave file from your game (NOT a manually created compressed save)
5. If the file needs to be fixed the 'Fix it' button will be enabled.
6. Click the Fix it button.
7. Continue with your game using the fixed file.

The utility will not let you fix a compressed manual save, or a file from any other game. You'll see an appropriate status message if you try to choose one.

Thanks for the fix for that civ. I unfortunately crash at the diplomacy screen of a different civ. I don't think it spoils anything to say that it's the spanish. Sometimes when I go to talk to them there's just a black square where the leaderhead should be, but most of the time it crashes my computer. I've tried replacing the leaderheads by doubling another leader and changing file names, both the 2 file gotm style and the 8 file full graphical mode. Of course, I assume the computer is trying to pull up the castille_aragon pics because those were in the diplomacy advisor screen, but I can't be sure. I'm using 1.29f vanilla civ3. I also tried downloading the old GOTM 20 Spain full download, but it is corrupted. I've otherwise dl'ed and installed 21-25. As mentioned above, I already used the fix mentioned in this thread.

This is my first GOTM, I'd love to be able to finish it. I've enjoyed the challenge.

Apparently my save file is too large to attach to my post.

Ditto on the Spanish error. I have tried much the same as dcstevez, but to no avail. It works okay the FIRST time that I talk to him (the leader-head is a flag), but (almost) every time thereafter, I crash back to desktop.
There is another civ (not sure if I should mention the name), that has the ??? instead of the picture, and when talking to him, I get just a black picture. However, I have not crashed when trying to talk with him.

I even tried playing with the save that was appended with "_Fixed.sav".

I have attached a save. Let me know if you need more info.

I'll try to have a look tonight after work.

Do you have all the game install packs installed? Are you playing this under PTW or under Civ? The lack of a leaderhead picture suggests that this might be a pediaicons.txt problem. If you are playing the Civ3 version, please e-mail your pediaicons.trxt file to me at gotm@civfanatics.net
(you can find it in your cvi3\text\ folder)

I am playing CivIII v1.29.
I followed an earlier thread and downloaded GOTM21_v1.29_full_setup, and the add-ons GOTM22 thru 25.
I will e-mail you the file.
Thanks!

OK => I think I have worked out what is causing this problem. Vague recollections are sometimes useful, but as I get older and more senile, I begin to trust my memories less and less.... This time however, I think I might have been right. ;) (or is an '' more appropriate?)

Anyway: If you are having problems with diplomacy with SPAIN, then Check this thread.

I don't think the installers have been updated! I suggest you check your civ3\art\flics directory. Those that have subdirectories called 'spain1.flc' 'spain2.flc' etc can simply drag the .flc files from these subdirectories out into the main directories. Those that haven't got these subdirectories can follow the copy-pase suggestion in the first two posts of the thread. If this doesn't work, or you need more assistance, then please let me know. :)

As another potential issue, players who haven't played recent GOTMs may be having pediaicons.txt problems. Most of these can hopefully be fixed by installing the GOTM 28 pediaicons.txt file. I have attached it to this post. Unzip it, and put it in your civ3\text\ folder. :)

Thanks ainwood!
I will download the GOTM28 Pediaicons and let you know how it goes.

Do you think that I should also perform the manual copy operations on the Spain.flc files as described in the link above?

I have managed to trudge a bit further in my game, getting several deals done with Spain, but it's hit-and-miss as to when the game will crash or not. I've been saving like a mad man, sometimes 2 or 3 times a turn. Unfortunately, Spain seems to be the only one with the Tech/Cash/Luxuries needed to cut some deals.

I have the same problem with Spain in the diplomacy screen. I am running CivIII v1.29, and have previously downloaded GOTM21-28. I have attached the save and would appreciate your input on how to proceed. Many thanks.

BTW, this has been an enjoyable game thus far, :goodjob: on the map!

I've grabbed your file and will take a look at it, but please can you confirm that you have eight copies of spain.flc in \Art\flics\, named spain.flc, spain1.flc, spain2.flc ..... up to spain7.flc?

EDIT: PS. I've now loaded it up and opened F4 and discussed options with Ferdinand of Spain without problems. Please check your .flc files.

AlanH,

I will check this evening and let you know.

Thanks

Thanks for the help. I downloaded the pediacons (sp?) and moved those spain files out of the folders. That was more annoying than it should have been because I had to rename all the files from spain.flc to spain1.flc etc. Because the folders already had those names, I first had to move the folders out of the flics folder so there wouldn't be duplicates of the same name. Anyway, it just took an extra two minutes. Thanks again for the help. Everything works great now.

Alan,

I have downloaded the Mac fixer but the application doesn't run. I double click the icon and nothing gets launched. Could you help me? Thanks.

Cheers,

I downloaded the pediaicons & did the copy of the spain.flc files, and the game is now working great!

Thanks Ainwood!

I had the same problems (spain crash, aztecs/koreans no small leaderheads) as mentioned above and some further graphic errors with foreign citizens (in particular koreans). however, I managed to finish my game, can I still hand in my save?
I reckon most bugs come from a sloppy written pediaicons file.
