Fix-It List

I dunno mate! I've described in detail what I did and it worked (for me, anyway!) It would need someone more knowledgeable than me to explain how. Bear in mind, CIV is turn based and not fps dependent like others. So quality probably is more important than performance in that sense.

It would be interesting to see if other people with a similar card/problem find that this fix works or not for them.

Is it just me, or does it seems all the people having difficulties are using one form of an ATI card or another ? 'things that make you go , hmmmm . . .'

Try turning down graphical details down a notch and see if behaviour changes, report on your findings.
Iv'e tried all graphics settings. none of em made any difference

Hello! i just got Civ 4, and so installed it. After installing the game without a glitch, i attempted to run it. The game brought up a screen that eventually said "Checking XML". Once getting to this part, the game just ends. No program is running or anything. My computers specs are:
3.0GHz
512MB RAM
21GB free (after installing the game)
128 MB PCI NVidia GeForce FX 5200
Why wont it run????

Sounds like you have V1. This issue was fixed in V1.52, load the 1.52 Patch, and if still issues post again in the Tech Forum as a new thread with your Dxdiag file

What is the link to get the patch? i went to the site but i didnt see Civ 4 under the patchs...

heh i was under "http://www.take2games.com/index.php?p=support_patches". thanks :) It worked!

Is there a setting specific to the wonder movies. Everything WAS working OK with version 1.09, but when I upgraded to 1.52, I started getting stuttering on the wonder movies. After much fiddling with the NVidia GeForce drivers, all on which only made matters worse, I reinstalled the drivers everything works again EXCEPT that wonder movies now cause the game to crash. I used Riva Tools to play with texture settings, and have tried lowering/removing audio acceleration; all made matters worse. What sorts of things might affect ONLY the wonder movies. Unless I can at least get back to mere "stuttering" I'm shut down, since you can't get very far in the game without building wonders....

i'm running 1.52 and i cant see terrain. before the patch the whole game wouldn't work. now i can play it but all i can see is units overlays cities and rescources. all terrain is just blackness. iv'e tried all the graphics settings and nothing seems to work. what do i do?

Your Problem

Well, I have a Radeon 7000, 64 MB and I fixed that error downloading the updated driver in the ati site and the patch in civ. In the oficial site you can go to support and have a look at the ATI video card graphics problem, or something like that...

Now my problem:

I know I am running the game below the requirements (256 MB Ram, windows XP Radeon 7000, the rest meets the ondition)), but it is working, slowly, but working.
The thing is the image seems to big for my monitor. It doesn´t show the right side of the screen. Il´l post a screen shot below.
I wonder if you could help me answering these questions:

1) The problem can be solved with my system as it is? If yes, how?

2) It is a RAM memory problem or video card? Cause I have money to buy just one of them .

Thanks for your time !

Greetings,

Flubio

The card looks ok - 256 is low, game recommends 512mb if running XP, so knee jerk reaction is upgrade the RAM to at least 512, but go for 1Gb if got the money.

But .... please post your Dxdiag in the forum as a separate thread so we can have a proper look at the system before you go and buy. Add to your post any bad symptoms that you have while playing

The game recommends radeon 7500 too and my problem seems to be a video issue.

Before starting the game used to tell me that its was running below the recommendations, but worked, with part of the screen hidden. I can´t see the minimap or anything on the right cause the image is too big. It doesn´t avoid me from playing, but it sure limits the playability, since I have to use loads of short cuts keys and can´t see the minimap nor part of the map.

And now, after a day being able to play relatively well the engine isn´t initiating again. Any ideas why it was working and suddenly stopped?
I´ll reinstall everything later today and see if I can get a pic from the problem above.

BTW, I have no idea what is a DxDiag ( I suppose Direct X diagram, but I don´t know what this is either)

Thanks.

Select 'start' in Windows, then 'run'. Type dxdiag and hit return.

I am mainly a console gamer, but Civ.3 quickly became my favorite game. So, anyway I'm not that great with computers and I need some help. After I install civ4 and open it up all the text is are just white blocks. And the faces of all the leaders are just eyes, teeth, and feathers or a hat. I have Windows XP with service pack1. An AMD 1800. The opening cinamatic runs smooth, its a little pixilized but most video on my computer is. I am dying to play this game, so someone please help.

Download Patch V1.52 via
http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/downloads.htm and run the patch

If still issues post again in main tech forum as a separate thread with your Dxdiag file

(Dxdiag - Start button - click - select run - type dxdiag - hit enter - wait a min - select save all information - post using the 'go advanced' button at the bottom of this screen, scroll down you will see it)

Many reasons why it may not still work or is still slow after patching (eg you got SP1 not SP2). If issues remain give as many symptoms as you can when posting the Dxdiag file

I have the dreaded "black terrain" bug with version 1.52, SP2 patch, latest ATI mobile driver, dxdiag is clean and error-free.

well this is my problem that im facing

the game runs fine until you are connected by any of the leaders,as soon as they contact me the map goes black .....
i have found a short solution to solving this problem, everytime it happens i go into options then click the graphics menu then i change the the screen resolution.....this does fix the problem until i am contatced again by another civilization.....it is time consuming and not enjoyable because most of the time i cant interact with the other civilizations....and what fun is that in a game of civilization???

does anyone know of a proper fix to this problem or am i one of the houndred that will be waiting for this miricle patch to be released?

When I try to open the game, either by clicking the desktop shortcut, going through start->programs-> etc.. or any other way you can imagine, it begins to load, but then just shows me a blank screen.

It is as if the game is running in the background, as I can hear the african tribal style music, and the opening movie complete with a monologue from spock, and can even see the cursor, which seems to denote it is loading something when I continually press the return key out of frustration. Yet it shows me nothing but a blank screen once the loading comes up as done.

Thought maybe video card wasnt up to scratch, but I'm using a mobility radeon 9000 which should be fine (I think).

all other spec is good (3Gig processor, 512mb ram)

currently preparing to throw dvd out of the window. any help would be much appreciated
