Fix-It List

actually unless you gave explicit admin rights to the installer (by right clicking on the program and choosing run with admin rights) the fact that it is an admin account does not mean any program has admin rights. In vista 64bit this means that some of the files the program needs write access to get only limited rights. I would suggest an uninstall and reinstall - making sure all installers and patches run with admin rights. This should definitely fix the fact that the .ini is not written properly - I have no idea if it can affect graphics performance though.

Ok I have the error where it tells me that my data3.cab is corrupt or in an unknown file format. Ive tried installing on my tablet pc multiple times and it keeps coming up with the critical error message. It installs all the way up to the end and then just stops and the setup freezes.

I know its not the CD because it installed fine on my older desktop pc.

Both computers are using XP with the latest service pack. I also updated all my drivers so it cant be that. My tablet is using Windows XP Tablet Edition, but I don't think that really makes a difference.

Any Suggestions?

holy fagballs its WORKING! you were right, i reinstalled EVERYTHING including original civ patches with everything run as admin and presto! IT FUNCTIONS!

Thank you so much

I am not sure what you mean - could you be more specific? did you install or uninstall the game, what does not come up (does it not start?)...

To respond, I load Civilization 4 and screen that comes from the disk comes up and I press play. Then, I wait and wait and wait but Civilization 4 never loads and the screen never appears!

is there any error message in the windows event viewer? do you run any anti-malware program that might interfere? McAffee has been known to do so sometimes...

No error message. What do you mean by anti-malware program? I have Norton Internet Security and AVG Free Edition. The Game stopped working one day I still don't know why.

is there anything in the event manager relating to civ4?
with anti-malware I do mean firewalls or antivirus programs. Some are overly aggressive with software - you could try disconnecting your computer from the internet and then disabling all those programs to see if that helps...

I am running vista and have had a problem since updating from the civ main menue.
after update game would not even start due to missing d3dx9_.dll. After fixing that problem game would not init the shader browser, tried uninstall game and could not eventually in my documents under civ found a file renamed reloaded game, Then was able to unistall. this all started becuas unable to put people on to caravel or galleon. any input would be helpful before I try to reload game.

No my firewall is wierd it turns off itself. No, I Know its not antivirus programs or firewalls.

Editing my whole post as I was able to get the game to start finally but then encountered an error.

I am terrible about trying to figure out whether my computer has what is needed to run this program. I have attached the dxdiag to this post to help out.

I suspect my video card is not the right kind to run this program. When I start the program, I am able to set everything up (pick land, ruler, etc.) but when it tries to actually load the program, I get "Cannot allocate video memory". When I look at the info on my video card, it does seem like i have the memory though--128. ??

Thank you for any help! I am not the most computer savvy person, so I do appreciate it.

:hmm: without any error message whatsoever its hard to pinpoint - a firewall that is turning itself off? that sounds like a problem with either a crappy firewall or a virus/trojan infection on your computer by the way.
I fear I am at my wits end :dunno:
