Hi, I just purchased Civ 4 for a new Vista laptop. It was running fine till I tried to update the latest patch(i think it was 174, don't remember), and now whenever I try to start the game, I receive error D3DX9_32.DLL, and suggests to re-install the game, but when I try to do that, I receive error (-5004 : 0x80041f42). I tried to download the Fall from Heaven mod beforehand, but the game wasn't registering that I had unzipped the folder. Any suggestions?

try the following:
set windows to show hidden files
then locate the installshield folder (\program files\installshield\ is the usual path) and rename that to whatever and try to reinstall.

Welcome to CFC :band:
is the game still installed? if yes all you need to do is install the below - the windows error message is the most bone headed of all of them - they want you to reinstall a microsoft program but tell you to reinstall a third-party program :crazyeye:

I couldn't find anything called installshield after changing the settings to show hidden files and folders. When searching for install I found that the installmanager was located in a folder called ATI. I changed the name of that folder, but still Civ 4 wouldn't install.

Other suggestions?

Thanks

there has to be an installshield folder - if you ever installed a non-microsoft program on there. It might also be in program files\common files\installshield\ - the other thing you renamed you should rename to its original.

edit: oh an restart the computer between renaming and reinstalling...

I renamed \program files (x86)\installshield installation information\, rebooted and tried again without success.

:)
don't start randomly renaming stuff - if that is really not present in Vista (which I would be surprised for various reasons) then renaming other stuff with similiar names can cause weird problems down the road. rename the installshield installation information folder back - it is necessary for various programs if you want to uninstall them at some point.

now this error message you post is an installshield error and the easy way around it is to force a new installshield install by renaming the folder where it is located. Let's try the not so easy stuff ;)

go to the bottom of this page and try to do what they list under tips and pointers:

I'm still curious that I can't find anything that says installshield, other than the other one you said I shouldn't rename.

OK, sorry for wasting your time on this. I did find the installshield folder and renamed it. It is now installing Civ 4. Thanks for any hair pulling you might have done.

Hi,

I've been playing CivIV no problem for years on the same computer I use now. Even online. Recently tried to install beyond the sword. Somehow after looking for CivIV patches/updates it aborts the install. Please help?

I have the latest version of DirectX and when running a diagnostic I don't get any error messages, just a note saying: that a certain file is different than the retail version and therefore it could run slower.

@jtav4: glad it works :)

Welcome to CFC :band:

is civ4 the retail (cd/dvd) version or a download version? what about BtS? is there an error message after the install aborts? did you look in the windows even manager for one? Is this winXP or Vista?

Both are retail versions. OS is XP. After 'searching for updated DX runtime stuff it says a newer version of Civ IV is available and it will install the latest patch. After that: patch failed to install.

Thanks for the help btw.

I started a new thread but I figured I would get some quick help here instead. My game runs really slow during gameplay like if anything moves on the screen or if I try to move round on the map it pauses for like 15-30 seconds before I can do anything again. I installed the newest patch but didn't install the patch before that, could that be the reason why or is my video card really that bad? Plus I'm getting where the map turns black over my cities and other places I have been to.

Thank you to anybody who helps me.

Invisible mouse fix:
Go to control panel and mouse settings. Turn off the trace and "hidden when writing".
After that it works again.

Just posting since I myself spent 1 year without Civ due to being unable to find a fix :I
