Fix-It List

i tried to run a downloaded map and when i try to load it, it gives me a runtime error. im debating whether i put the downloaded files in the right place, so if you could tell me exactly where to put them, that would be great.

Maps generally belong to this folder:
C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\PublicMaps

Are there more files? Then you don't have just a map, but a mod. There's also a "Mods" folder in civ directory, use that.

I'm having the "black terrain" problem. I've spent most of the day trying to fix it with no success. Downloading 1.61 has fixed the leaders faces but the terrain is still black and I can't really tell what's going on.

Is my laptop even capable of running this game? I'm not very technologically minded but having said that - I don't think I've ever been this disappointed and angry after buying something. I wish I had never bought it in the first place. All I want is my money back at this point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Your connection to GameSpy is not working. I suggest you have a look at the sticky threads in the multiplayer forum in the first instance to see if you can solve your problem. If you're still having problems then post a query in that forum.

Hi, I have the dvd version of civ4 and installed it fine. When ever i put the dvd in the dvd drive the autoplay screen comes up and i press play. It shows the loading screen but then the 'Cannot Locate the CD-ROM / Please Insert the Correct CD-ROM' message appears. Im not sure how this happened, it installed and recognized it but then forgot it was a dvd. I have restarted the computer and checked it was a dvd but it wont play.
Help please.

p.s. will the patch do anything?

It still doesnt work.... I patched and it took longer than usual to load but still the insert the correct cd rom message appeared.

some more options:
- sometimes, it takes several attempts, then suddenly the game loads
- uninstall CD/DVD related software. some of these cause trouble
- check if there's a firmware update available for your DVD drive
- search for modified executables if all fails :/

I just purchased a Vaio VGN-FE780G notebook followed closely by CivIV. After installation I got a message saying that my machine was bellow min. requirements and that CivIV would not run on my hardware. I was disturbed because as far as I can tell my machines stats are more than adequate. The game actually seems to run fine so far, but I'm worried about the message. Any input or advice?

This is probably caused by the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (google told me that your notebook has this GPU). Which is an integrated graphics card and officially not supported. BTW, you can suppress the annoying message in the ini file (HideMinSpecWarning = 1).

Advice: if everything's running fine, ignore the message.

Having played all the earlier Civs, I was hoping to paly CivIV. However, I have the "black terrain" problem on my PC (SiS video card). I have managed to play on my (newish) Toshiba laptop, but towards the endgame I get the error message "failed to allocate video memory. Please try reducing your graphics settings File:\Sowoe\main\civilization4\SDKs|Gamebryo2_0\CoreLibs\NiDX9Renderer\ViDX9VBManager.cpp, Line:1019". I have tried reducing to low but it doesn't make any difference.
After all that effort (I was winning), I would like to finish the game.
All help greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Thanks very much.

#8 helped me get up and running.

Things had been running fine on my 4:3 LCD, but when I plugged into
my 50" DLP TV through a DVI, whose resolution is 1280 X 764, the game
would fail to load with the Initialize renderer error you mention.

All I needed to do was see your first suggestion, editing the .ini file.
I changed the startup from full screen to ask, set my res to 800 X 600,
and now I'm up and running. (I say "no" to fullscreen)

I couldn't keep things at 1280 X 1024, trying to set a custom height
and width, without it seeming to ignore the values and default to
a size that was too "tall" for my widescreen...any ideas there?

I am using a GeFORCE 5600 graphics card, mid range and a couple of years
old...

thanks again...

After reading tech support forums from my motherboard, ati and here on this forum, and following all the advice on upgrading my drivers, patches to 1.61 I'm at a loss. Originally when I installed civ4 I had the same problems that I'm having now except that after updating drivers and installing v1.61 everthing seemed to start working fine, but then one day after not playing Civ4 for a few months I again wanted play but my video started crashing again after playin for about and hour. My monitor says its not getting a signal, and the screen goes black, but I can still here my HD turning, so I have to reboot by turning off my computer. Heres a copy of my dxdiag. I hope someone can help, please. Thanks again

Hello folks,

I've been searching through this thread and there are just so many unique problems that my eyes went cross reading them all. Here is mine and I hope that I can generate some help.

When it comes to initialize the engine in that first loading bar I get this error message
