Oh, Validation isn't what it used to be, they directed me to a 404 when attempting to validate, I'll look into updating my ATI drivers later on too, probably couldn't hurt to try that as well.

Unfortunately, the Direct X fix didn't work, I might need to try drivers now

this was patch 1.74 that caused this right?
post again when you tried updating your graphics card drivers and it still does not work

I posted a message below... I downloaded my copy from gamestop and can't update my civ iv, therefore, not allowing me to play online. It says "must have previous version of civ iv installed." Why? Please help.

just upgraded to windows vista and civ wont load. downloaded latest patch and got d3dx9_32.dll error. downloaded dx9 that was on the firaxis web site, now it will load to init engine and then just shuts down? any help would be greatly appreciated. the computer is a dell inspiron with windows vista home premium 32 bit sp1 edition.

i just got a new laptop that runs windows vista. for some reason, after installing the game fine, it says i have the wrong cd in there, but when i put the other cd in there thats the wrong cd as well. Help please?

this is an issue with sfaedisc the copy protection system:

make sure you run the game with administrator rights
try a compatibility mode (e.g. for xp)
disable and better remove any emulation software (i.e. virtual drives)
try running the game after disabling any antivir/antimalware software - but only AFTER disconnecting from the internet
make sure the firmware for your disc drive is uptodate

Hello I just bought CivIV Gold and I am having problems getting the game to start. When I click to play the game just displays the loading screen and never anything more. I was able to get it to run once and not anymore so I am at a loss as to what might be the problem I have updated my drivers and BIOS since experiencing the problem.

could you please post your dxdiag results?
(click start, click run, type dxdiag, hit enter, click save results - come back here and attach the saved file to a post by clicking on go advanced then on manage attachments below the reply box)
also open windows event manager (howto) - does that contain any errors that might relate to civilization?

I've attached the dxdiag.txt file and when looking at the event viewer I came across this error.

Faulting application civ4warlords.exe, version 2.1.3.0, faulting module ~df394b.tmp, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00078c9c.

the error report is a safedisk error - i.e. the game does not recognize the disc in the drive as genuine.

Thank you so much it actually runs now! However I can only get it to start from the autorun feature on the disc. The shortcuts still give me the same problem. At this point though I am just excited to play.

this is weird - glad it works somehow though
you might want to check if the properties set in the shortcuts are somehow different from the actual executable they link to - but apart from that I have no idea what causes this

hey all well i am out of options and cant figure out whats wrong..

When i originally installed Civ IV (no expansions) it works perfectly no errors. I have DirectX 9.0c. After installing the new 1.74 patch I had to download and install the D3DX9_32.dll because of that error. It then worked past that error and is now giving me an Error Loading Shader Libraries. I am attaching my DXDiag to this post in case that helps. All video drivers are up to date (Dell forgot to download them so i had to from their site). Any help? However when i try to install the DirectX web setup it just gets stuck at initializing. Is that my problem?

you should have installed the updated directX - and not just the dll - do that and you should be fine

No i know that i already have 9.0c. Everytime i try to install that it gets stuck at initializing. I just installed the Directx redist or w.e and it WORKED! i then tried to login online and it froze my game up though. Im going to go try again though. Thanks

Ok it works now but the whole reason i even installed the patch was to play online. Now every time I am at the log in screen and Log In. The game freezes. Like the world stops turning but music is playing and mouse still moves just cant click anything have to alt+tab out of it and cntrl alt dlt it to get it to close. Any ideas?
