Welcome to the forums :band:

I've suddenly got the game running in windowed mode, the mouse won't scroll, and on full screen. What happened and how exactly do I fix it?

OK...so my old system died.... and I had previously installed CivIV 1.74 and BTS 3.17 on my new computer.

It's been a few months...and I couldn't get either program to run.

So I did a clean install of BTS 3.17 and the program ran with no problem.

Exit the game... and I cannot run BTS or CivIV again.

Another clean install of BTS.... and I can run the program ONCE...

And then nothing.

And by nothing....I mean nothing. I double-click the BTS exe file....and get a "working" cursor for a few seconds.... and then nothing.

Running Task Manager during this shows no attempt is ever made to actually run the program.

I'm on a Vista machine now.

Any ideas? I really can't see having to fully reinstall the game EVERYTIME I play.

@ ori :king:

thanks for helping, the first link was direktly the right one! And fixed my problem

I do this:

Rename the InstallShield file.
ie:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield
change it to something like
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield1

The program was able to install, and everything worked out.

The installation work without any message;:) only Installshield wizard finished :D

Thanks!!!! :goodjob:

click on options and then check the full screen option

it is likely the user access control of vista acting up - you need to install the game with admin rights (right click on the installers and chose run as administrator) - also it is possible that it wants to run in XP compatibility mode on your machine - try that as well :)

Hi,

I've installed BtS on my new Vista 32bit laptop, plays fine first time but when the machine is rebooted it starts to load up then the screen changes to black for the graphics....and it stays there. I've done a complete uninstall and manually removed all files left behind, installed vanilla and updated then did the same for Warlords and BtS and still the same problem. No mods loaded up, and the discs and installations work fine on my old XP desktop (way to go microsoft!!!).

Theres a compatability issue with my laptop; I've checked all the drivers are up to date, it uses an ATI card and the laptop comes with DirextX10 and when I've tried to install DirectX9 it says its already installled/more recent version installed.

The machine is a HP 6735s Laptop AMD Turion X2 Dual Core RM-72 2.1Ghz, 4GB 800DDR2, 320GB with Onboard ATI Radeon HD3200 and Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm sure its bound to be a fairly obvious thing but can anybody help please?? Don't leave me to go through civ withdrawal please........it won't be pretty.....

:cry:Thanks Ori,

Tried that but no different. I should mention I have also got the SDK update and the 32dll in the system 32 folder. Any other ideas I can try?? Please

I think (if I've got this right) this is what the event log shows under WMI

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Is that any help at all? Many thanks for your efforts Ori

HI Ori,

Many thanks tried that but no difference I'm afriad. Should I be looking for somthing else in the error file? I'm afraid I'n not a techinical genius with these things but I'm learning!

Only other ideas I have is to try and roll back drivers/catalyst center to earlier settings and see if its a graphics problem as there seems to be problems with Ati cards and Civ/Vista. Its either that or set a dual boot up with Xp on and load there and try and run as XP rather then Vista when playing Civ.

For the record, graphics info is as follows:
ATI Radeon HD3200 Graphics (Default LCD)
Driver Packaging Version 8.479.1.4-080521a-064461C-HP
Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
2D Driver Version 7.01.01.747
2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/Class/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0567
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.7417
Catalyst® Control Center Version 2008.0521.920.14728

Dunno if that helps any.

Many thanks for help so far, any and all comments gratefully recieved

:hmm:

I would probably recommend a complete reinstall at this point - use the below as a guide. Make sure to run all installers as admin (right click on them an choose run as administrator - best is not to use the prompt that comes up when you put the disc into the drive but open the disc with and look for the setup.exe file then right click an run as admin - do the same for all patches) - if you do not have warlords ignore those parts.

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.17 (download it fresh from here).

Cheers Ori,

I'll give that a try later. Been looking online and there sems to be a newer version of Catalyst and drivers for my card from ATI which were only released at the start of April (only found that by looking direct at the ATI site, my update says I'm all updated but I ain't), so I'll probably give that a try as well and see if it helps any.

I'll update when I've had chance to try the different ideas.

Weird problem here. I've had no problems running BtS on Vista (32) for over a year, but yesterday I fired up a saved game from last week and there was no interface in the game. Alt + I did nothing, and when I hit Esc and tried to click on Options, nothing happened either. Also, when I start BtS, it skips the movies and goes straight to the main menu, and I can't get to options from there either.

I've heard rumors about problems being caused by a Microsoft update (and I did update recently), but I'm not sure how to proceed. I've already tried reinstalling everything (including my Gold Edition, though vanilla and warlords seem to be working fine) and re-patched to 3.17, but it's still the same problem. Help?

Hi again,

Well in the end(!) settled on doing a drive partition, with the new drive being XP Pro and installing Civ there; works no problems (was fun tho doing the partition and installing all the drivers etc!!).

Many thanks for the advice and help over the past week.

Cheers,

Idlewood

Hey, im new here and tried reinstalling Civ4 (no expansions), but i get the "Failed To Initialize Renderer - Check Directx Version and Graphics Settings" so i snooped on this site and the official site for an answer and found the download patch 1.52 page thats supposed to fix this issue, but the link is broken and the page doesn show up, so im wondering what to do now. I cant uninstall the game either. Sorry if this is a noobie question or if it doesnt belong here.
