Fix-It List

Hi, I am new to this and not very computer literate but I love the civ games. I just received Civ 4 and am having trouble with the game. I have gone through the fixes listed on here and have applied the two patches 1.62?? & 1.74. I also updated my drivers for my video card. My dxdiag -

I just upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and I had to tell it to wipe out everything and then install a new Windows because of language differences (I was installing an English Windows 7 over a Spanish Windows Vista). I need to get back to Lima to install CivIV again (I didn't bring the disk because I wasn't expecting to have to reinstall the game after the upgrade). I'm posting this because I'd like to give you a heads-up if anything happens.

I've been a longtime player of Civ IV with BTS and Warlords, but I recently decided to put it on my laptop, and well, it's not playing nice.

I couldn't find my second disk to the original Civ IV so I went out and bought the complete edition, and it works fine when I go into Computer>Program Files>2K Games> Firaxis>Civ Complete> and then choose Civ IV or Warlords, but when I go to BTS, it starts up with lots of sound and graphics bugs, and when I go to patch it, it tells me 3.19 is available, so I download it, and then when it prompts me to hit "Install" to quit the game and install the patch, nothing happens. Same with Colonization.

What the heck is wrong?
I know that this patch issue happens with this game on other computers too, my friend has the complete edition too and he can't update Civ IV BTS, but doesn't have the issues.

I'm running an Acer with 1.6 Ghz 2X Athelon processor, 2.5 Ghz RAM, no idea on the Graphics card, some kind of NVIDIA card.

Help?

Help?

what operating system is this?

This reminds me of Dell's tech support.

It seams during a game update after clicking the check for updates button. The install crashed.

While loading the game I get this message:

This application has failed to start because D3DX9_32.DLL was not found.
Re-install the application may fix this problem.

Reinstalling the Direct X just says the install has completed.

While trying to reinstall I get this:
The setup has detected that version 1.74.000 of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is already installed. This setup installs and earlier version of Sid Meier;s Civilization 4 (1.61). You will have to uninstall the previous version before installing this version.

And trying to uninstall I get this:

Error Code: -5004 : 0x80041f42
Error Information:
*C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\12\00\Intel32\iKernel.dll
>inc\CoCreate.cpp (44)
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (1390)
PAPP:Sid Meier's Civilization 4

Both the iKernel.dll or the D3DX9_32.DLL are missing.

Now what do I do so I can play the game Since it was working till I clicked the Update button.

Welcome to CFC :band:

the 1.74 patch requires a directX update - so a new install from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en

would have solved your problem.
Did you delete any files yet?
if not: it might just help. If yes you'll likely need to reinstall and I guess you have the game of the year edition?

I still am baffled by the fact that they distributed a patch that requires a DirectX update without packaging the required update with the patch :gripe: - but that's an overpaid quality assurance department for you ;)

Yes I do have the game of the year edition. The update worked and I didn't delete anything so the game loaded up fine after the patch was finished without a problem. I do agree with you on them not putting the DirectX update in the patch or at least telling you before installing the patch to download and install the DirectX and provide the link. Thanks for your help I do appreciate it.

I get this message after few turns. Can you help me by step by step to end this problem?

I tried numerous ways but I can't stop it. I installed that ccp but it does not work again. I'm goin please help

Hey guys, brand new here so hi.

I was getting the problem where after ending each turn the game would freeze (this only happened when reloading after a fairly large amount of turns had been played). I tried everything listed on the front pages however none of this worked. What did work was turning the game's graphics to "low." I guess my ATI Radeon 1050 couldn't handle it! haha.

Not sure if that has already been posted somewhere before, I didn't feel like going through 60+ pages to find out.

EDIT:

Oops, ORI already posted this a few threads back. The guy had the same card as me too so I'm guessing that would resolve the problem. Anyway, hi.

is that an update for DirectX 9 or 10,or 11?

I didn't think they were still updating the libraries for 9, if not, then why would a game like Civ 4 require an updated DirectX10 or 11?

Actually it updates 9c (and 10/11 with older code) - Directx9c was updated as late as last year - but what is more important, Microsoft in their ultimate wisdom removed some of the Dx9c code that some game publishers rely on from their early Dx10 and 11 releases - so that some games including the newer updates of Civ4 and Warlords ceased to work when they relied on this code to be present - this update restores those pieces of code.

a classic example of why it sometimes gets called Micro$uck

Today I found out some (seemingly) sloppy coding, I had installed Warlords after BtS so when I tried to uninstall Warlords to open up space it broke BtS in the process...
