Fix the 5th trash game

if i just magically happen to learn german, starting from not knowing any at all, within the next two weeks, can i call you to get help playing this round? actually i think captain cabert would not approve of that. likely cam too, our faithful co-captain in spirit even if not in actual title due to scheduling constraints and, ummm, potential conflicts of interest between responsibilities here and his relationship with mrs. cam.
AFAIK, giaur is from Poland. Meaning he speaks polnish (dass is das deutsche Wort, but polish sounds like I would wash my car) and not german.
I spend the biggest part of my working day giving hints for the round to come, so really, you won't need more help than the pregame discussions!

OMG i even knew that but totally spaced and forgot! i blame the drugs, and the fact that i'd been talking to a german friend earlier who's coming to the US for a post-doc fellowship. so i had germany and hydrocodone on the brain. i apologize.

ok what i'm about to say is not meant to imply in any way that your advice is not helpful, well-meant, and very wise, because of course it is all of those things. but then there's the matter of actually applying it. if you really think that reading that is all i need to get us up to the stars, dude you are crazier than i am, seriously.

if you get to the stars in the next 40 turns, I'll pay you a ticket for Paris;) . Get all help you wish within the rules.

here is my trashy trial. LEt's hope it's the worst and others do better.
Spoiler :

did what I said I would.
no time for a full report, and I took no screenies.
result :
2 cities more (self built), IW and GT built, steam power, railroads, and physics in. (+democracy+MT+scimet).
Still at war with bismarck, but the price for peace is one of my cities. Could have had peace for one of his cities 20 turns ago. too bad I didn't accept.

So it's about the 18th of May that our next turnset is submitted. Is that right?

Good to see people putting their relationships ahead of the game. Lets face it, the game can't give you a back massage.

I've had a whole lot of trouble catching the rhythm of this game, but it's been a good change from usual games.

Cabert's plan sounded pretty straightforward. That's not the same as saying I agree with it (or at least all of it).

Certainly we've got a GE sitting around drinking tea, we've also got a GS sipping tequila in a deck chair so putting them to work is an obvious thing to do.

We've also got a monopoly tech in steel and trading that will be useful (or we could keep cannon to ourselves and trade steam power in a few turns which might be a better option).

On the other hand we've also got an antedeluvian army which is costing a lot of upkeep. We could really do with more than six cities. Finding a way to get a GM for a trade mission to modernise the army would be very useful indeed.

And then of course there's all the other clever moves that I'm not good enough to think of.

Seeing that we are in hiatus, I have 2 weeks off work, and my girlfriend lives overseas, I'm going to start up another SG to keep me busy. I will of course keep going on this game till the bitter end.

Have a look at the ''loom of the land' SG if you're not one of those needing a break.

My phone number is classified, but still you can PM me ...

:) i'm still working up the courage to try this one *giggle*. but i will. emergency plan, if needed, is that hubby will sit here for encouragement and hand-holding as necessary.

not really disappointed, losses happen. i mean it would be a bummer, but it wouldn't wreck my week.

i would, though, consider it a sign i ought never join another SG, quite frankly. you really do not understand how superstitious i am .

 Your game wasn't selected yet, nor for a trash game nor for a fixing game. How would you be the cause of a loss?

Anyway, with our format, we have still a reasonnable chance of winning, but seeing my performance (don't look if you didn't play yet) in this trash round, I'm a bit scared.

you don't understand superstition at all, it is obvious! and you have no IDEA how often i knock wood every time anyone here uses the L word. you know, the opposite of win.

i haven't lost all hope yet, that's not why i need courage. i'm just not looking forward to getting beat up and then putting the results in public, even knowing it's a friendly public here .

Can we win space race with 6 or 7 cities is a fairly fundamental question. We'll probably find out  .

Long rambling report put in spoilers;

Spoiler :
Well, a somewhat different game to the others that have been posted so far (viewed after posting my game!) – essentially went down the technology path and bypassed all warfare. We’ve got three new cities (two fringes and a good one) and closing in on Computers.

Opening

There’s no doubt that under normal playing conditions I would have missed this, but there was a bit of preamble chat in the thread about Bismark having his “hands full” that I felt the best path was to drop the other pact and hide behind the aggressor. I suspected that Bismark was going to try an off-shore invasion of that strange teal-coloured tribe that we’ve yet to meet, but was wary nonetheless that he could attack Persia-Celtia.

Cancel Defensive Pact with Persia;

P66605_1600_cyrus_nodefpact.jpg

Workers were sent to clear the jungle in the middle of our empire. Our Settler heads down into the jungle.

The Caravel kept heading west to meet the teal-coloured tribe with Seoul as its capital.
 • Madras > Observatory
 • Verlamion > Grocer
 • Vienne > Theatre
 • Gergovia > Observatory
 • Delhi > Observatory
 • Calcutta > Grocer
… and make the Steel trades …
 • Cyrus : Steel + 190 gold <> Democracy
 • Roosevelt : Steel <> Scientific Method + Map + 20 gold
 • Brennus : Steel <> Military Tradition + Map + 30 gold (optional tech, but may as well)
 • Aug Caesar : Steel <> Corporation + Map + 50 gold
I set our technology path pretty well directly to Computers;
 • Steam Power (part researched only) > Physics
1655 - 1665

Lahore is founded;

P66605_1600_lahore.jpg

We notice that within a turn Persia has upgraded its siege weaponry to Cannons. Afterwards we cancel the Iron flow to Cyrus.

With the acquisition of Scientific Method, we note we have Oil in the desert to the north!

I opt to send our resident Great Scientist to our second best commercial city in Madras and build an Academy there.

We concede to a request by Cyrus to cancel deals with Roosevelt, and we have a few health problems as a result.
 • Calcutta > Observatory
Big Civics switch away from ‘Farm Economy’ to ‘Cottage Economy’;
 • Representation > Universal Suffrage
 • Bureaucracy > Free Speech
 • The Caste System > Emancipation
 • Pacifism > Organised Religion
Gergovia had some workers converting Mines to Windmills, but I stop that as I see it as quite a good production base.

1670 – 1700

Caesar demands Scientific Method, and I concede. We meet “Shut up I hate you!” Angry Korea Man. Mission accomplished, the Caravel returns towards our western coast. We drop our science rate and hurry some Observatories.
 • Delhi, Madras, Verlamion, Gergovia, Calcutta > Theatre, and then ..
 • Delhi > Settler > Settler
 • Madras > Jewish Missionary
 • Verlamion > Hindu Temple
 • Vienne > Mausoleum > Jewish Temple
Bismark switches into Theocracy … hmmm

1710 – 1750

Trumpets! Bismark attacks Cyrus and Brennus gets dragged in. India becomes Switzerland :shifty:.

I give in to Wang Kon’s demand for Rice.
 • Physics > Electricity
We have Uranium!

Madras’s Jewish Missionary succeeds in spreading the faith in Lahore.

We move Delhi’s Settler to Arbela – hopefully it will get razed and we can steal the spot.
 • Cyrus : Dye <> Wine
 • Vienne > Observatory (later rushed) > Market
 • Gergovia > Grocer (later rushed) > The Kremlin (after Communism trade)
 • Calcutta > Bank
 • Madras > Grocer > Bank
 • Verlamion > Hermitage
 • Delhi > Market
I try to improve our relationship with Augustus Caesar, and gift him the old technology Democracy, and Open Borders. Doesn’t help much – he sits on Cautious.

Arbela is captured by the Germans, but not razed.
 • Bismark : Democracy <> 680 gold + Map
 • Cyrus : Physics <> Communism + 430 gold + Map
 • Free Market > State Property
We are invited by Bismark to join his war against Persia; I think not. No problems, he’s still Friendly.

Eventually Arbela is razed by Brennus, but German culture prevents us from founding on the ruins. I wait to see if Verlamion can push it back so we can pick up the Rice tile in the fat-X.

Karachi is settled to the north to pick up the tasty the Oil-Spice-Rice resources.

P66605_1600_karachi.jpg

Germany takes Ergili – the former Persian city to the north-west above Madras.

1755 – 1800

Electricity > Steam Power (partly completed)

Persia completes The Kremlin and we pick up 95 gold for our effort. A Jewish Missionary spreads the faith in Karachi.
 • Gergovia > Ironworks
 • Lahore > Granary
 • Vienne > Scotland Yard
 • Delhi > Bank > Jewish Missionary
 • Calcutta and Madras > Market
We connect Horses and cancel Wang Kon’s free Rice.
 • Steam Power > Radio
We have Coal!
 • Caesar : Communism + Physics <> Railroad + 20 gold + Map
 • Bismark : Communism <> 940 gold + Map
 • Cyrus : Rice <> Fish
Workers begin railroading Mines and Lumbermills.

The German battles continue, and Frankfurt looks as though it could fall – lots of Persian Cavalry versus entrenched German Riflemen.
 • Lahore > Grocer
 • Karachi > Granary
Delhi pops a Silver!

P66605_1600_silverdelhi.jpg

1790 sees a cessation of violence, and peace breaks out amongst our Jewish peers. Frankfurt remains in German hands. All is well again in the world – and regrettably the borders don’t push back far enough away, so Kolhapur is founded in a sub optimal spot;

P66605_1600_kolhapur.jpg

We make sure there are no further nasty surprises;

P66605_1600_bis_defpact.jpg

1802 - 1820
 • Karachi > Forge
 • Calcutta > Jewish Missionary > Hindu Temple > Broadway
 • Delhi > Machine Gun
 • Madras > Drydock
 • Verlamion > Observatory
 • Kolhapur > Lighthouse
 • Gergovia > (Ironworks interrupted) > Harbor > Ironworks
 • Cyrus : Dye <> Wine cancelled (one Winery was pillaged in the war)
 • Roosevelt : Communism + Physics <> Combustion + Divine Right + Map + 10 gold
Brennus takes one turn as being a free state of Cyrus before again becoming a voluntary vassal of Persia.
 • Cyrus : Divine Right <> 380 gold + Map
 • Bismark : Dye <> Fur
 • Bismark : Divine Right <> 160 gold + Map
 • Caesar : Divine Right <> 110 gold + Map
 • Roosevelt : Spices <> 6 gold per turn
 • Radio > Computers
 • Delhi > Machine Gun
 • Kolhapur > Granary > Forge
 • Madras > Eiffel Tower
 • Verlamion > Rock ‘n’ Roll
 • Vienne > Spy > Spy > Spy
 • Lahore > Observatory
Upgrade Caravel to Submarine.

We pop a Great Artist (Homer; alleged author of The Iliad and The Odyssey) in Delhi.

On the last turn it is reported that Augustus Caesar constructed Broadway.

We have a sleeping Great Artist and 'untouched' Great Engineer from Gaiur's round. One Spy in Germany, and another in “Shut up I hate you!” Korea.

Game and comments both today. Edit:[spelling corrected]

Spoiler :
Inspired by Giaur, born out of war, I decided to take it to Bismark. Bismark beat me to it declaring on the rest of us. I had a good stack of catapults elephants and 2 rounds of drafted rifles by that time though. The stack moved 2 E of Delhi to sit in the jungle and absorb Bismarks stacks.

Realised too late that my auto log isnt working now, so a patchy report, sorry.

I probably should have sat on the Delhi side of the river and let Brennus and Cyrus absorb the stacks. I didnt expect Cyrus and Brennus to send such big stacks up to fight. That was good.

Infantry in, and more drafting. Frankfurt taken but Vienne lost !

On to Bombay, with the chequered past. Indian, given to Persia, taken by Germany, taken back by India?

Traded biology for Assembly line with Cyrus to help with drafting. Also trading with Augustus, including a deal for coal, but Roosevelt has cut off trade.

Bombay captured.

Infantry pilaging up by Munich, but the Cryrus/Brennus stacks are doing something else. I have burned all my siege and have to settle for sitting outside Munich and taking the brunt of Bismark's cav/rifle/cannon attacks.

Physics nearly done at 100%. Some trades with Augustus for gpt.

I realise I cant take Munich so give Bizzy Democracy for peace.

Civics change, U suff , Free speech , Emancipation , Free Market , Free religion .

Settler grabs the floodplains SW of Munich and to secure oil. New settler building for near Vienne.

Cyrus wants Physics for combustion. I agree because we will need it for plastics if no other war occurs.

Then I did a real dirty trick and opened borders to Bismark in the hope that he can hurt Cyrus some more.I think there is no diplo modifier for this.

Ha ha, got me. no it was a typo. Not a toad like save or toadish. I'm quite happy with the save and am starting to think we could win it after all.

Edit: then I look at Giaur's save and think, mine's not so good after all. Cam too.
