[FIXED] Crashing on Huge Map Size - What's the Limiting Factor?

I had the same problems with crashing with huge map and all details set to high. To fix it I dropped Fog of War and Water texture to medium and I can now play. I do sometimes get some crashes when trying to load saves or start the game, but those usually will fix if I reboot the computer.

In all, I'm enjoying the game.

@Krustoph: Could you reload one of your old saves before you crash out then see if it could be a GP spawn from any city or a GG spawn crashing your game?

I have since tried to reload 2 of my games, and both crash out on load. Video drivers updated. I have a suspicion its my XP Pro installation, but the amount of time required to reinstall XP (plus the frustration of trying to find the disk since i now actually need it lol) just doesnt seem worth it atm. I havent had any issue with GP's since ive had a number of them during the course of my games, and they work fine. I honestly cant find any real trend with the crashes, it seems quite random.

Im probably going to upgrade to Windows 7 soon so untill then, im probably going to be Civ 5 less :(

Will post any update if i get something working.

Cheers!

I'm a little new to this, (see # of posts), so forgive me if I'm repeating/not including enough info. I'm running Vista, Quad core 8GB, ATI Radeon 5770 1GB. I can't play huge or large maps either. All settings currently set to low. Updated drivers. I have been able to progress to the last era in the game, but only in my most recent game. All others crash much earlier. I can reload older saves, but they all crash at same point. RAM usage doesn't seem to go above 3 at time of crash. I've given up playing the large maps, currently playing on small, no problems. I love the game, just wish I could finish a marathon game on huge map. Just thought I'd let you know I'm having same problems with a system that is above all recommended settings. Cheers.

I am running a dual core non-hyperthreaded 2.4G AMD chip on Windows 7 32 bit with only 2G of dual channel DDR2 800 corsair memory. I do however have an ATI Radeon 2600 512M of DDR 3. I always start huge maps with 7 civilizations and 28 city states. I just made it to 700 AD at 1920 x 1080 resolution before it white screened on me and crashed. I still see the game but it has a white cast to it as if it had a gamma problem and it stopped responding. I am at a 75H refresh rate. My processor is doing fine at around 16% but my ram is locked at 79%. I have been to much later dates on the same game settings with lower graphic options. It doesn't sound like a graphics card problem or memory problem to me. It sounds like a game bug somewhere that a specific item like resolution or fog of war causes the crashes even though the game can be ran in all other aspects.

That's exactly what wa shappening to me, but once I put the leader setting on low, no more crashes when meeting Civs. You may want to try that if you haven't already.

Also, there appears to be a bug when you hit 70 cities, not really a large map issue, but one you're not likely to encounter except on larger maps.

Setting the Leader graphic setting to low works. Thanks
