Flood Plains --> Burning Sands?

Currently Flood Plains (3F 1G) are converted to Burning Sands (0!) when they become hellish terrain, destroying upgrades as well. (ie. 3F 6G Towns)

Is this intentional?

Flood Plains cannot currently be converted to Plains via Spring, so this really, really hurts AV on Flood Plains (who will see there Cities/Farms burnt to the ground first.)

Until this is changed, ye be warned.
 
Best bet would be to hug the coast with lighthouses and procure the bounty of the sea. As it stands, heavy pop growth will hurt in the early game--once the Counter hits 40, all farms, camps, and pastures are destroyed.
 
OK I see that you cast spring adjacent to the fire square and it douses it. However I can't get rid of the burning sands which just seems to hang around and spontaneously combust!!!

Thus...burning...sands. They burn! :lol:
 
Same situation here. I was playing as the Sheaim, and a good part of my empire was desert/floodplains. As such, as soon as hell started spreading, most of my farms burned, as well as my incense plantations (deeper in desert).

This would be an example of Hell being bad in a, to reference my earlier posting, terrible and destructive way. If Hell could be terraformed at all, this wouldn't be as big of an issue... but apparently, it can't. Upon discovering just how bad Hell really was, I worldbuildered myself up a Druid, and tried Vitalize. No effect; Hell is apparently quite permanent.

I'd suggest that this should be fixed, as is all it does is needlessly punish the player for choosing the evil side... if you'd let Spring terraform the Burning Sands up to Fields of Perdition (perhaps only when there is no Fire within range?) then this would at least stop Hell from dooming a player with desert-heavy terrain.
 
Which you can then terraform before it reverts back, yeah.

You'll need to blow a mana node on Life Mana, though, which just feels strange when playing AV. Or, if you're playing the Sheiam, you could just hope you get lucky and a Moebius Witch with Sanctify finds her way into one of your cities.
 
One way that was added for the player to get around the destruction of hell is to adopt the civic sacrifice the weak. It was changed to be availible with the Ashen Veil founding tech, and it now causes your citizens to use only one food rather than two.
Meaning you will lose some food/health when your flood plains/forests burn, but you should only need half as much.

Your neutral neighbors, however, won't have this option, and if you can get the counter high enuogh to spread hell into their lands, they will suffer much more than you.

It might not be balanced as is, but a way to survive is there. I found myself quite competitive even with much of my lands nigh-impenetrable fires.
 
I ended up casting Spring on all my deserts and cutting down forests before the fire and hell terrain reached them. However, you cannot Spring Floodplains, so you have to wait until they're burning sands, then Sanctify them, then Spring them before they're Burning Sands again.

Alternatives to making a Life Node:

AV Priests can get Chaos II and summon Imps who might have Life I.

Also, Water will undoubtedly be a popular mana now, and Water II provides Djinni, who could also have Life I.

Not good options, but you might be desparate anyway.

Or simply make a hell alternative of flood plains, "shores of styx". (river acheron is already used :( )
 
Shores of Styx sounds good; but it's not terribly useful unless it also counteracts the burning (otherwise, you still lose your farms/hamlets).

On a similar vein, I notice that Hell has no effect on Tundra and Ice. Any plan to include hellish frost of some sort, or is that a subtle hinting at the fact that after Fire, comes Ice?

Which works alright if you are on pangea but not if you are on islands so that hell terrain won't spread into other pplz' lands.:(

I haven't come across this (I checked the wiki too) - is that a river near Archeron's city or something? :confused:
 
No, in classical mythology, Acheron is the underground river which boatman charon brings over on their way to underground. Styx is another river in the underground. I just proposed a name for flood plains in hell. They could put out the fire as well.

PS: The only time you don't have to worry is, when playing for infernals, just run total specialist economy. You don't need any food.
 
I just started playing yesterday, but haven't had much trouble with hell terrain yet.

There was only one civ which even had hell terrain - and that was Hyborem himself.

I said "had" because he wasn't a problem anymore after I killed him off (chiefly by throwing four chaos marauders at him each turn until he got weak enough to be killed). There are no longer any burning sands on the map at all, and the Armageddon counter has dropped down to 5. :)
